Modern efficiency with a link to the past. introductionthe chevrolet impala is a mid-size sedan packing nearly full-size family room. It even feels like a big luxury car. The impala handles well and accelerates quickly when equipped with the optional 3. 8-liter v6.  by any other name, the impala would be an impressive, significant car. But chevrolet chose to honor an icon of the 1960s, not only with the impala name, but with key visual cues as well. Impala is calculated to push the nostalgia button for a certain generation.  from 1958-65, impala meant the flashiest full-size chevrolet, a real working-man's cadillac, tame in its base form but offering performance options to match its aggressive looks. However, when ordered with the optional 3. 8-liter v6 the impala is quick. The chevy impala feels more responsive than the six-seat sedans from toyota, dodge, ford and buick. The more up-market ls comes with gm's proven and highly competent 3. 8-liter v6, producing 200 horsepower. The 3. 8-liter engine is available as an option 995) on the base model. Remote keyless entry has been added for 2003.  the ls sport appearance package 1495) adds brake cooling ducts, a strut-tower brace, a tire-inflation monitor, and extra gauges to a graphite-finish instrument panel; the package is distinguished by embroidered logos on door panels and floor mats, a body-color taillight panel, and chromed exhaust tips.  xm satellite radio is optional on both base and ls. Xm's sound quality is remarkably close to a compact disc, according to chevrolet.  onstar is standard on ls and optional on base impalas. Gm's onstar is a customer-service network linked via satellite. The impala is significantly shorter (9 inches) than a dodge intrepid, yet it's slightly larger in total interior volume.  the impala's most distinctive styling cues are its headlight and taillight clusters, which use a unique combination of round lights clearly visible from behind trapezoidal covers. Again, credit the high roofline with relatively vertical sides. The impala's designers also carefully rearranged the rear bulkhead, and moved the seats slightly outboard. They feel like bucket seats. But the front-center passenger has to straddle the split between the seats. Controls are logical, work smoothly, and are easy to see. They follow the function of those in the smaller chevy malibu, but they're bigger. Individual temperature controls allow the driver and front-seat passenger to create their own microclimate.  the chevy impala boasts more interior volume than the dodge intrepid, but the impala's rear seat area is shorter on useable legroom. Still, the impala is better in this respect than the ford taurus or the even the full-size ford crown victoria. The impala's rear seating position is comfortable and relatively high, which makes it easy to get in and out. There are three shoulder belts in the rear, as well as latch child-seat tethers. In the ls, the rear seat is split 60/40 and folds down to allow bulky items to protrude from the trunk, handy for trips to home depot.  the headliner is nicely padded, to meet the federal head-injury standards. A seat-mounted side-impact airbag is standard on ls and available as part of several option packages on the base model.  . driving impressionthe impala feels like a big luxury car, even compared to a ford crown victoria or toyota avalon. The toyota feels bland by comparison.  the view out of the impala is good, helped particularly by the small quarter windows that split the rear pillars. The creases on the hood are useful for judging just where the front of the car is, which in turn is handy for parking a big car in compact spaces. The rear deck lid seems high, however, so care is required when backing up.  handling is surprisingly quick and sharp. This is not the wallowing, live-axle barge from the 1960s. One reason is the impala's extruded aluminum engine-cradle subframe, a first for the industry says chevrolet, which isolates vibration while allowing for a more rigid structure. A monster dashboard bulkhead made of light and strong magnesium further enhances to the impala's rigidity, giving the car a robust feel. The engine cradle and dashboard structure lock the steering shaft down tightly, so there are no excess wiggly movements. Chevy says a novel link between the steering column and the steering gear contributes to better on-center feel at the wheel. Both impala models benefit from anti-roll bars front and rear, hardware associated with sports sedans.  on the road, the steering provides good feedback, better than the toyota avalon's steering. The ls we tested felt particularly precise, with its quicker steering ratio.  likewise, the brake pedal feels firm and responsive. Chevy claims the impala can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7. 7 seconds, quick for this class. It honors the heritage of the original impala, without reviving the old car's excessive bulk. 2014 chevrolet impala review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Originally launched as a 1958 model, the impala name boasts a long, storied history. Though of late it was often dismissed as a mediocre rental car, the impala is back with a vengeance, sporting a sophisticated design, high-quality interior and spot-on driving dynamics.  chevrolet is now calling the five-passenger impala a full-size sedan, though it was previously classified as a midsize. The 2014 impala is front-wheel drive and shares gm's epsilon platform with the buick lacrosse, buick regal, cadillac xts and chevrolet malibu.  three engine choices range from powerful to practical. General motors' familiar direct injection 3. 6-liter v6 is the beefiest of the bunch, with 305 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque. A 2. 5-liter ecotec inline-4 makes 196 hp and 145 lb.-ft., while a 2. 4-liter inline-4 with gm's eassist mild hybrid system is good for 182 hp and 172 lb.-ft. All variants use gm's 6-speed hydra-matic transmission. The v6 will roll off the assembly line first, followed 2. 5-liter 4-cylinder, with the eassist version expected a few months after that.  epa fuel economy ratings for the v6 are 19/29 mpg city/highway. By way of comparison, the old impala got an epa-estimated 18/29 mpg with its standard 3. 5-liter v6 and 17/27 mpg with the bigger, 3. 9-liter v6.  better aerodynamics help the 2014 impala with fuel economy, in part aided by new wind blockers positioned in front of the tires, which look like mud flaps put on the wrong way. Efficiency is aided by new electric power steering that draws energy only when the steering wheel is turned.  a quiet ride is one of the 2014 impala's strong suits. Top-of-the-line impala ltz trims with the v6 engine can also be equipped with full-range adaptive cruise control with collision mitigation braking and brake pre-fill. With this technology, the impala will automatically keep a safe distance from the car in front while cruising, and will slow down or even stop itself if a collision is imminent.  chevrolet hopes the impala will end up in more driveways, not just in rental car lots. An optional ls package 570) adds foldable rear headrests, a cargo net and rear park assist. The advanced safety package 890) adds forward collision, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning and side blind zone alert. The premium seating package 945) includes heated faux suede front seats, power passenger seat and cargo net. A premium audio package 1140) upgrades to an 11-speaker bose surround sound system with additional ambient interior lighting, a120-volt power outlet, rear spoiler and 19-inch alloy wheels. Navigation 1,095) also includes keyless access and ambient lighting. A power sunroof 1,050) can also be added to lt models already equipped with one of the aforementioned packages.  impala ltz with the 2. 5-liter inline-4 34,555) or the v6 36,580) includes perforated leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power driver's and passenger's seats, push-button start, rearview camera, rear park assist, hid headlamps with led daytime running lights, exposed dual exhaust pipes with bright tips and 19-inch alloy wheels. Impala ltz comes standard with the safety features found in the lt advanced safety package. Options on the ltz include a comfort and convenience package 1,035), which adds ventilated front seats, a heated leather steering wheel, memory power steering column, seats and mirrors; auto-dimming rearview and driver's side mirrors. Navigation 795) must be paired with the comfort and convenience package. The bose premium audio system 700) is also available. A rearview camera is optional and can help the driver spot a small child when backing up. Collision mitigation braking, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning and side blind zone alert are optional. walkaroundthe design of the 2014 impala is nothing like chevrolet's done before. It oozes sophistication and quality, attributes that don't easily come to mind with the outgoing generation. The front grille is stretched horizontally, giving it a broad, unique look while keeping chevrolet's signature dual-port look. Round headlamp bezels are evocative of german luxury cars. Fog lamp housings are short and wide, nearly mimicking the shape of the headlamp housings above.  from the side, a high, deep belt line cuts straight across from the top of the wraparound headlamp housing to the rear door handle. A sharp arcing character line starts in the rear door, flows high over the rear fender, and straight into the top of the rear tail lamp lens. Bright trim around windows and across rocker panels on the ltz model add class, and optional 20-inch wheels give the impala an almost show car-like quality. Standard 18-inch wheels on lt models and 19-inch alloys on ltzs still look good, if not quite as impressive.  the wide, horizontal theme continues in back. Tail lamps start tall on the outer edges and narrow as they point inward. They have a raised detail that are not only visually interesting, but serve as aerodynamic aids to keep air flowing off the vehicle, rather than around it. Small touches like these help with fuel economy and with reducing wind noise in the cabin. The rear bumper is big and beefy, and exposed exhaust tips on ltz models have a chrome-like finish with an almost rectangular shape. interiorthe cabin of the 2014 impala is attractive and comfortable, with very good fit and finish and materials quality.  the center stack is well laid out and has many controls without using an overwhelming number of buttons. Climate control knobs are large and easy to see, with the temperature digitally displayed inside the large circular dials.  there's lots of storage space for drinks, accessories and snacks. A little cubby in front of the center console storage fits a mobile phone. Door pockets will fit an average-sized water bottle perfectly.  seats are roomy, supportive and comfortable. Front passengers have lots of knee and legroom thanks to a pushed-back glove compartment and instrument panel. Front legroom is 45. 8 inches, a 3. 5-inch increase over the old impala. Concave doors give more space, sometimes too much depending on the size of the driver or passenger. Smaller drivers might not be able to reach the armrests with their hands properly on the steering wheel.  rear passengers have plenty of space, too. Concave seatbacks reduce cramping around the knee and leg area, and foot room was adequate. Legroom measures 39. 8 inches, 2. New structure, new styling, new interior. introductionthe impala has been changing, morphing, and maturing with the vagaries of the market since 1958 when the first one showed up as a coupe and convertible.  now, the chevrolet impala has been substantially upgraded for 2006. The 2006 impala features new and very attractive exterior styling, a new interior, and a choice of three new engines.  the new impala is a comfortable and convenient car, roomy, easy to get in, with big grab-style door handles. It's a practical sedan with innovative flip-and-fold back seats and folding rear seatbacks. And it comes well-equipped with safety features, including side-curtain airbags. The impala lt best exemplifies the model line, especially when ordered with the larger, 3. 9-liter engine, which delivers responsive performance. The ltz upgrades with leather, a very nice xm satellite radio setup and other convenience features.  an inexpensive pricing structure with loads of rebates on it puts the new impala on the shopping list for family sedans. Impala competes with the ford five hundred, chrysler 300, dodge charger, honda accord, toyota camry, and nissan altima.  the ss stuffs a small-block v8 into this package. It comes with the bare essentials, such as air conditioning, power windows and locks, am/fm/cd, cruise control, cloth upholstery, a bench seat, and 16-inch steel wheels. Anti-lock brakes are optional 600).  the lt is available with the 3. 5-liter v6 21,860) or a new 3. 9-liter v6 24,760), which includes 17-inch alloy wheels. The ss comes with 18-inch wheels and tires and a performance suspension.  safety features that come standard include dual front smart air bags, and side-curtain roof-mounted air bags. Underneath, it gets a stiff new body and chassis structure, retuned suspensions with a 10-mm wider track, and new 16-, 17- and 18-inch wheels and tires.  the ls, lt and ltz share one front end design, while the ss has a completely different nose architecture. interiorthe new impala has a lot going for it inside as well, with a completely new, cleaned-up interior, reshaped and reupholstered seats, and flip/fold rear seats.  we felt pretty comfortable overall inside the impala. The seats have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support than previous models. We didn't find the ss seats particularly comfortable or supportive, with too much lumbar support and not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners. Optional leather-covered seating has a new style of seams around the perimeter and french seams on the center sections.  the impala also has a new twin-brow instrument panel design that wraps around into the door panels. Ls, lt and ltz models have a wood trim, with brushed silver trim optional. The impala ss comes standard with metallic trim panels, with wood trim as an option. We found the panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. We found the interior materials at least one grade better than the usual chevrolet stuff.  the optional dual-zone climate control system can have up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. It's a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The dashboard has an expanded driver information center, now with more than 50 different alerts, depending on the vehicle's equipment. The base audio system includes am/fm/cd and six speakers. An optional mp3/cd-radio is configured for xm satellite radio, with a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. The optional icdx radio adds an in-dash six-cd changer. All radios include a standard auxiliary input jack for external devices such as an ipod or remote cassette player.  the rear seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The rear seat cushions flip forward to create a covered storage area under the seat (with cushions down) and grocery bag hooks when the cushions are flipped. The seatback also folds down flat to create a large pass-through port to the trunk.  trunk space, at 18. 5 cubic feet, is more than competitive in the segment, and it has a huge opening for easy loading. driving impressionthe new chevrolet impala comes with a new generation of v6 engines. We found them to be smooth and quiet if not bristling with power. Variable valve timing is a first for the impala's cam-in-block v6 engines. The system changes the orientation of the camshaft, automatically adjusting the timing of the intake and exhaust valves for better performance, economy, and emissions. Thus, a system that started out on very expensive imported cars has now reached down to the lowly chevy v6 engines and made them better.  the 3. 5-liter v6 that comes on lt and ls models generates 211 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. The 3. 9-liter v6 that comes on ls and ltz models produces 242 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque. We're expecting both engines to earn fuel economy ratings of about 19/29 mpg city/highway.  with 303 horsepower, the impala ss has more power and torque than any other entry in the class, but the chassis that comes with the v8 needs taming. While we appreciated the extra power and torque available in a kickdown or passing situation, and we loved the brawny, muscular sound of this engine at full throttle, it's a challenge to launch cleanly and quickly at the same time. Besides wheelspin, there's a lot of torque steering. This system helps provide up to 8 percent better fuel economy in light-load driving conditions. However, there is a lot of pitch, dive, and body roll in this chassis, and a lot of uncertain driving moments with the added power of the ss. Steering is over-assisted, fairly numb and uncommunicative.  the impala's front suspension is a macpherson strut coil-over-spring independent design, with gas-charged struts and a stabilizer bar with new, taller jounce bumpers. The rear suspension uses a trailing arm, tri-link setup with gas-charged struts and coil springs. A rear stabilizer bar is standard on all models. The new abs includes electronic brake-force distribution. summarythe new chevrolet impala represents an improvement over previous models. The 3. 5 and 3. 9 v6 lt and ltz versions are pleasing to drive overall. While the ss cuts a conservative but dashing figure with its quiet badging and giant five-spoke, 18-inch wheels, it's got more power than it k.
