2003 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The modern american wagon. introductionthe ford explorer is one of the best sport-utilities in its class. A stiffer frame and a fully independent suspension provide superior ride and handling on road and off road. Its v6 was revised last year and a v8 was added as an option. Both are available with a superb five-speed automatic. It's roomy, capable of seating seven people when equipped with the optional third row that folds flat into the cargo floor when not being used.  for 2003, ford added more standard equipment and important new options. Xls and xlt come standard with cloth upholstery; eddie bauer and limited come trimmed in leather.  an overhead-cam v6 engine is standard on all models. An overhead-cam v8 800) is an option for all models except the xls. Ford's new five-speed automatic transmission 1095) is optional and we highly recommend it. Xls comes a high level of standard equipment, including a new am/fm/cassette/cd stereo, but it does not offer some of the high-zoot options available on the other models, including the v8. An $1150 sport group for the xls adds the premium center console, step bars, body-color metallic wheel lip moldings, and 16-inch aluminum wheels.  xlt 28,745) gets nicer sport cloth upholstery, a six-way power driver's seat, body-colored exterior trim, and more luxury features, such as a temperature gauge and compass, map lights and dome lights, outside approach lighting, extra power outlets, and an illuminated keypad for keyless entry. The five-speed automatic transmission is standard, and aluminum alloy wheels replace steel wheels. New for 2003 are a chrome grille and black-grain outside door handles. Leather upholstery with a six-way power driver's seat is available for $655. Six-way adjustable heated power seats with dual manual lumbar supports are used in front, and the driver's seat has a three-position memory feature. The top two explorer models differ only in their distinctive trim: eddie bauer comes with arizona beige bumpers, moldings, lower bodyside cladding, satin-nickel wheels and grille, and p245/65r17 all-terrain tires. Limited uses monochromatic bumpers, moldings and cladding with a silver grille and unique wheels; the limited model is available in white pearl-coat paint with frost accents.  options for all models except xls include third-row seating 670), auxiliary air conditioning 610), running boards 395), power adjustable pedals 120), reverse sensing system 255), and power moonroof 800). The canopy also promises improved side-impact protection by staying inflated for a much longer period of time. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly recommend ordering the safety canopy. Dual front airbags are standard, and feature smart technology that adjusts their inflation rate according to the severity of the accident. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are standard on all models; abs allows the driver to brake and steer at the same time in a panic stop. Seatbelts use retractors and pre-tensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. This newest explorer achieved a 4-star driver/5-star front-passenger ratings in the government's national highway traffic safety administration front crash tests. walkaroundthe current ford explorer is the same length overall as the pre-2002 models, but it rides on a longer wheelbase (by 2 inches) and a much wider track. Pushing the wheels out toward the corners makes the explorer more stable and more comfortable. All new last year, this explorer shares only its name with the pre-2002 models involved in the firestone tire recall.  the explorer's styling is fresh, contemporary. It looks solid and handsome. Smoothly integrated front and rear fascia are used in place of the traditional bumper treatments. Jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Yet this newly designed explorer clearly evokes the previous-generation explorer. No one will have trouble identifying it. Few will notice it at all. I dropped something next to the curb while getting out of the explorer one dark night; hitting the button on the key fob illuminated the approach lights and i immediately spotted it. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but ford says it's a popular feature among loyal owners.  the standard roof rack is designed to support up to 200 pounds. For messier cargo, there's a new nbx package 1110), which includes a yakima multi-use loadwarrior cargo basket, special black exterior trim, special seat cloth, and 17-inch machined aluminum wheels mounted with b. Goodrich rugged trail t/a p245/65r17 tires. interiorthe ford explorer is a comfortable vehicle on long trips. Convenience features abound that make it pleasant while driving and when stopping. The eddie bauer model comes with the traditional beige steering wheel and pinhole leather seating material. Handsome gray wood accents lend a luxurious appearance. Light-colored trim on the inside a-pillars and grab handle add to a light, airy atmosphere. It's a successful execution, though the mouse-fur roof liner is nothing to write home about. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm and supportive, with lots of adjustments.  adjustable pedals, a telescoping steering wheel and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubby holes with rubber mats provide space for wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keep odds and ends in check. Interior door handles seem a bit awkward at first, but that went away with familiarization. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but wouldn't accommodate my one-liter bottle from poland springs. The front power outlet was positioned well for a cell phone, but like most, was a bit of a reach for a radar detector. The trip computer came in handy, calculating the distance to an empty fuel tank.  the front seats are comfortable. They are wider and offer more fore-and-aft travel than before. Seat heaters are part of the eddie bauer way of living. But the buttons that control them are mounted on the sides of seats, which is a bit awkward. Reaching down to the side of the driver's seat, the left hand is confronted with an array of seat adjusters; finding and pressing the seat-heater button is a challenge. Likewise, it isn't always easy to find the height adjuster. But rake is easy to adjust, and there's a knob on the up-level seats for cranking in some lumbar support.  the second row of seats, the row we recommend for those who didn't get to drive or sit up front, is quite comfortable. 2010 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A standard among full-size suvs. introductionthe ford expedition is a full-size sport-utility vehicle. It seats up to eight people, hauls a mountain of gear, and tows moderately heavy trailers. The second- and third-row seats fold flat to create a useful rear cargo area. That's nice on long drives.  changes for 2010 are minimal. There is the mykey programmable vehicle key, the availability of the sync voice-activated communications and entertainment system, three new colors, and trailer sway control is standard. Expedition was last redesigned for 2007.  with its combination of utility, a smooth, stable ride and a pleasant interior, the ford expedition is a fine choice for families that tow or take driving vacations.  the ford expedition comes in two lengths, the standard model with a 119-inch wheelbase, and the expedition el with its 131-inch wheelbase. Every expedition is powered by a single-overhead-cam 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 310 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment. A leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, front and rear air conditioning with rear controls, remote keyless entry, automatic headlights, alarm, an am/fm/cd stereo with mp3 player connectivity and rear controls, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, overhead console, and illuminated visors are also part of the package. Exterior standard equipment features 265/70r17 tires on alloy wheels, running boards, roof rails, fog lights, power-adjustable heated outside mirrors, a rear liftgate with flip-up glass and a rear defroster/wiper/washer system, and a keyless entry keypad.  the expedition xlt el 38,610) and xlt el 4wd 41,510) are equipped the same as standard wheelbase versions, except they come with a split-folding third-row seat and a conversation mirror.  options for xlt models include third-row bench seat 875) or power-operated third-row bench seat 1,370), leather captain's chairs 1,295), a heavy-duty towing package 395), sirius satellite radio 195), rear-seat entertainment 1,295), and a power moonroof 995). A convenience package 895) includes a reverse-sensing system, power rear quarter windows, universal garage-door opener, six-disc cd changer, and power-adjustable pedals.  the expedition eddie bauer 40,890) and eddie bauer 4wd 43,790) are trimmed as outdoor adventure vehicles and are distinguished by a longer list of convenience features as standard equipment, notably the expedition's unique power-folding split third-row seat. Other standard features include leather upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, memory for the mirrors and driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, a premium sound system with six-disc cd changer, trip computer, conversation mirror, mirror-mounted turn signals, power-adjustable pedals, and protective cladding for the lower body panels. The eddie bauer el 43,075) and eddie bauer el 4wd 45,970) are equipped, basically, like the standard-wheelbase versions.  options for eddie bauer models over and above those of the xlt include heated and cooled front seats 625), power running boards 995), a navigation system 1,995), second-row captain's chairs 795), and air suspension 485).  the expedition limited 42,660) and limited 4wd 45,560) add heated and cooled front seats, 10-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, universal garage-door opener, power rear quarter windows, and 255/70r18 tires on chrome alloy wheels. The limited el 45,310) and limited el 4wd 48,210) are equipped the same.  the expedition king ranch 45,190) and king ranch 4wd 48,090) have upgraded chaparral leather upholstery, king ranch badging, and gold exterior accents. The leather also trims the center console lid, steering wheel and door panels, while wood trim can be found on the center console, shifter handle and instrument panel. King ranch el 47,840) and king ranch 4wd el 50,740) have the same features.  safety equipment includes front airbags, torso-protecting front side airbags, three-row head-protecting side-curtain airbags with rollover deployment, tire-pressure monitor, anti-lock brakes (abs) with brake assist, and advancetrac electronic stability control with roll stability control. A rear obstacle detection system is standard on limited and king ranch, and optional on eddie bauer. Trailer sway control is standard. walkaroundthe ford expedition is a truck and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. This is a good identity to have, because ford trucks continue to have an outstanding reputation for utility, reliability and durability.  both the long and regular-length versions of the expedition use many of the components from the ford f-150 pickup. However, the expedition features independent rear suspension, which improves driving precision, ride comfort, and rear-seat roominess.  this third-generation expedition features a three-bar grille, large headlights, and a domed hood that combine to deliver a look that's both distinctive and respectable. There are several different wheel designs, including 20-inchers with a chrome finish.  expedition el models stretch the wheelbase to 131 inches. Overall, the el measures 14. 8 inches longer than the standard expedition, and that adds 22 cubic feet of cargo volume. As a result, crowded parking lots can be challenging. The expedition has a turning circle of nearly 41 feet, while the el requires 44 feet.  they're also heavy, as even the base 2wd expedition weighs almost 6,000 pounds, and a loaded el with 4wd will be comfortably over that.  the king ranch model can be identified by its gold exterior accents and unique wheel design.  the expedition comes with running boards as standard equipment. Power retractable running boards that deploy when the doors are opened are optional. Some prefer no running boards, but that doesn't appear to be an option. interiorthe ford expedition features a rich blend of finishes, textures and color. Indeed, a king ranch is the best representation of modern american-style luxury within ford's lineup. Wood, chrome and leather make the expedition an inviting place to spend a day on the road. Leather-upholstered examples are available with a heating/cooling feature that makes them a more comfortable companion in winter and summer. Generous driver's-seat travel helps accommodate taller drivers, and it's a perfect match for the expedition's movable pedals, so a wide range of sizes of drivers can sit comfortably.  the second seating row reflects ford's thoughtful approach to passenger comfort: the standard 40/20/40 bench seat incorporates a center section that slides, bringing a child seat within easier reach of front-seat passengers. Optional second-row captain's chairs with a center-aisle pass-through can be substituted for adult-rated comfort.  packaging advantages afforded by the expedition's independent rear suspension enable the third-row seat to deliver more comfort for adults compared to the accommodations provided by the chevy tahoe. In fact, third-row room is among the best of any suv, though three adults won't want to sit in the back for long. The high ride height also makes getting in and out a task for children.  the expedition's liftgate with its flip-up glass hatch makes access to the cargo area very easy. The expedition's second- and third-row bench-type seats fold flat into the cargo floor, affording a long cargo area that can be easily loaded. In this regard, the expedition is much better designed than gm's large suvs. The expedition is also available with an optional power-folding third-row seat and electronically powered liftgate to make it even easier to load cargo. However, the seat cushions of the second- and third-row seats are a little slim in order to allow the seats to fold properly.  the expedition is about more than convenience. A dvd-based navigation system with sizable 6. 5-inch screen is available as an option. The rear-seat dvd entertainment system has an eight-inch screen that flips down from the headliner and also includes two sets of wireless headphones. A plug-in jack for an mp3 player is standard acro. 2011 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, reinvented, and better in every respect. introductionthe 2011 ford explorer is not only the beginning of a new generation, but of a new life. Ford calls it 100 percent reinvented, and it's the truth, and it's all good.  this reinvention of the venerable ford explorer is 4 inches longer, 5 inches wider, and makes the third row standard. Yet it's 100 pounds lighter. Its engine has 80 more horsepower and gets 25 percent better fuel mileage. Its price is $1100 lower than the previous model.  the 2011 explorer pretty much blows its competition out of the water, with first-in-class epa fuel mileage of 17 city/25 highway miles per gallon, first-in-class horsepower (tied with jeep grand cherokee), first in cargo capacity and second-row legroom. Ford claims 10 segment exclusives, including some in safety, with optional inflatable rear seatbelts 195) and standard curve control, which applies braking to individual wheels as needed to correct corner trajectory.  there are three explorer models, base, xlt and limited. Each seats 7 passengers, and uses the new 3. 5-liter v6 engine, 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, with a new 6-speed automatic transmission. It has 237 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque, gets one more mile per gallon, and likely won't cost any less.  the optional 4wd terrain management system uses no transfer case. The driver selects the terrain with a knob (normal, sand, mud/ruts, or snow/gravel), and the car does the rest, flawlessly. It has beefy but smooth proportions, with short overhangs and fluid lines that are 12 percent more aerodynamic than before.  the chassis is super rigid, using twice as much high-strength steel as the old. There's also some boron steel whose strength is not only high, it's also thin and it bends more easily, to form the explorer's front bumper beam, allowing the fenders to wrap gracefully and fade away at the corners. Such curves also help to transmit crash energy down and outside, away from the cabin.  there's a segment-leading 80. 7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front seats, with the split rear rows folded, which they do at the touch of a button on each side, bouncing back up with the pull of a lever. There's outstanding second-row legroom of 39. 8 inches, with good third-row space at 33. 2 inches.  ford's stated goal was to make the explorer's interior look expensive, like the cabin of a bmw x5 or audi q7. They've succeeded, at least on the explorer limited, whose leather seats are perfect, both in bolstering and stiffness/softness.  the front seat elevates high. The explorer will be a versatile family vehicle, so the seats have memory for the xlt and limited, while the steering wheel and pedals adjust for different drivers in the family. Mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with optional manual shifting, we found the power and acceleration to be smooth and responsive, with plenty of torque to maintain 80 mph on an uphill freeway, after a smooth and welcome kickdown to 5th gear.  ford put all the engineering effort it could muster into the new explorer, and got the ride, handling, and nvh results they hoped for. The rigid chassis and careful tuning of the independent suspension produce a superb all-around ride. We found the new explorer takes corners and undulations flat (without excessive leaning), and the speed-sensitive electric power steering enables it to turn relatively tight and quick.  we tested the explorer off-road as well as on the highway. The terrain management system uses no transfer case. Even with all-season tires (as opposed to all-terrain tires which improve traction in snow, sand and mud), the explorer blasted around a sand pit and traversed deep ditches and steep hills, no problem. It was the smoothest ride we've ever encountered over such terrain.  two-thirds of all 6 million explorers sold over the last 20 years are still on the road, says ford. The explorer vehicle engineering team took prototypes of the new model over towering colorado passes, buried them in deep sand in the california desert, carved through snow in minnesota and northern michigan, traversed mud bogs in alabama, and logged countless development miles at arizona and michigan proving grounds.  all three 2011 explorer models seat seven passengers. Initially, all use the new 3. 5-liter v6 engine with new 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2. 4-liter turbocharged and ballyhooed ecoboost motor will be available later in the year. Also standard are first-row airbags, side seat airbags, and side curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; tire pressure monitoring system, and front ratcheting headrests. Optional safety equipment includes inflatable rear seatbelts 195), blind spot system with cross-traffic alert 495), adaptive cruise control, and collision warning with brake support. walkaroundthe 2011 explorer is a looker. It truly looks 100 percent reinvented, ford's motto for the car. And it is a car; we can stop saying truck for almost every suv now, and maybe even stop saying crossover, because they've just about all crossed over. Such curves also help to transmit crash energy down and outside, away from the cabin.  the explorer is 4 inches longer and 5 inches wider than before, and its width is evident in its confident stance, but its smooth styling cheats the eye. It has beefy but smooth proportions, with short overhangs and fluid lines that are 12 percent more aerodynamic than before. Details such as the liftgate spoiler lip and flexible lower front air dam (black) were tweaked in the wind tunnel. We still like body-colored better.  the hood looks short from the side but long when looking straight down it; it's got two parallel humps and a scoop in the center, smoother than it sounds.  the window outline is clean, bold and symmetrical, with blackened a-, b-, and d-pillars, and with body-colored c-pillars that slant down and back and impart forward motion to the vehicle. With the dark privacy glass, from the shoulders up, in white at least, the explorer looks like a sleek and powerful yacht. The fender flares are inspired by the mustang, body sides follow the lines of the taurus, and new three-bar grille strikes clearly of range rover (formerly in the family).
