Its popularity is partly because of toyota's good name, which promises top-notch quality, durability and reliability. The highlander is available in base or limited trim, each with front-wheel drive or full-time all-wheel drive. A choice of two powertrains is now available: a 2. 4-liter inline-4, rated at 160 horsepower, comes standard. A 3. 3-liter v6 that produces 230 horsepower is optional on the base highlander and standard on the limited. More power available. introductionwhen it debuted as a 2005 model, the chrysler 300 revived the long-dormant tradition of the full-size, high-style american performance car. While a 2. 7-liter v6 was standard, and a 3. 5-liter v6 optional, the engine that grabbed the headlines was the top-tier 5. 7-liter hemi v8 developing 340 horsepower. the 300's namesake and inspiration, the original chrysler c-300 of 1955, was one of the defining members of the big-muscle breed, powered by the original edition of chrysler's famous hemispherical-head v8 known as the hemi. It won the nascar championship in its first year out, and set top speed records on the beach at daytona. later 300s featured bigger hemi engines and better-handling chassis. And now chrysler is following this tradition, too. The instrument panel and switchgear are easy to read and operate. Pieces of mercedes-benz are slipping into chrysler cars nowadays, and the 300c features a mercedes-like steering wheel, leather under an arc of wood at the top. a chrysler 300 with a 2. 7-liter v6 retailed for the low price of $24,450 including destination. It's a large, modern, stylish, comfortable car for a small price. The 340-hp hemi has to carry 4046 pounds, so it won't run with a corvette, but it is plenty fast, with a 0-60 time of 6. 3 seconds, according to chrysler. At the same time, the ride is smooth, solid and comfortable and the cabin is very quiet. With a base price of $34,400, it's a deal. along with the new dodge charger, the 300 is the first big, rear-wheel-drive sedan to come out of chrysler in many years, replacing the front-wheel-drive lh line which, in one form or another, had served chrysler since 1993. Back then, there were engineering cases for front-wheel drive, including reduced manufacturing costs and more efficient packaging. But the way chrysler sees it, more prosperous times call for more performance-oriented cars, and rear-wheel drive remains much better than front-wheel drive for managing horsepower. new technology has also helped the case for rear-wheel drive. Traction control, electronic stability programs, anti-lock brakes, and electronic brake distribution all improve the driver's ability to control the car. One of the most oft-touted advantages of front-wheel drive is traction in snow, but that too has been erased over the years. Trim levels are keyed to engine size. the base chrysler 300 23,775) comes with a 2. 7-liter double-overhead-cam v6 making 190 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque, and rated 21/28 epa miles per gallon. This is a true high-performance sedan, in the mode of bmw's m models or mercedes' amg brand, and it features loads of performance tweaks, unique design features and most of the luxury gear. The srt8's centerpiece is a 425-hp, 6. 1-liter hemi v8. stand-alone options include front and rear curtain airbags, boston acoustics premium sound system, air filtration, ultrasonic rear object detection, self-sealing tires, hands-free cellphone capability, power adjustable pedals, premium sound system, gps navigation system, sirius satellite radio, sunroof, walnut interior accents and xenon high-intensity headlamps. Higher-level models can be ordered with a dvd entertainment system integrated into the center console. walkaroundthe chrysler 300 is clearly bold and, we would argue, cool. But mostly the styling is uncompromising and makes no apologies. Rear-wheel-drive architecture allowed this whole new shape. The wheelwell cutouts, wrapping around 17 or 18-inch wheels, are striking. The wheelbase is long for a modern car at 120 inches (the 1955 original stretched 126), but the overhangs are short, offering a visual sense of power. The roof rakes thickly down to a short deck, and the sides are like large slabs. The long hood glides forward and drops off a cliff whose face is the massive grille, so strong it dictates the car's lines. the high-performance srt8 may be the coolest-looking 300 of all. The front and rear ends direct air flow through unique ducts that cool the brakes, while a specially designed rear spoiler increases rear downforce by 39 percent, helping keep the rear tires firmly planted at high speed without increasing drag. Yet the coolest thing about the srt8 might be its 20-inch, forged aluminum wheels and asymmetrical high-performance tires. These maximize that visual power, and they're staggered in the classic track-performance tradition, with the rear tires slightly wider than the fronts. interiorthe interior of the chrysler 300 is marked by spacious silence. Chrysler engineers have been reducing interior and wind noise with all their new vehicles, so it's not surprising that the flagship sedan should get the treatment. Chrysler has its own $36 million aero-acoustic wind tunnel, and they've been trying to get their money's worth out of it. the cabin is roomy, thanks largely to the efficient shape of the exterior: the chassis is pushed out to the wheels, and the wheelbase is long, leaving 106. 6 cubic feet (sae standard) inside. The most go for the dough. introductionthe chevrolet camaro, and its cousin, the pontiac firebird, just might be the best performance values on the face of the planet. Restyled for 1998, these sleek sportsters come with major mechanical enhancements and offer performance ranging from really good to awesome, at prices that are surprisingly affordable and competitive. the camaro and firebird are as american as it gets: long and low with a powerful engine mounted in front and rear-wheel drive. Room for rear-seat passengers and cargo capacity are not top priorities. But for style and performance at a great price, the camaro and firebird are nearly impossible to beat. We drove the camaro z28 coupe, but what we have to say about the camaro applies to the firebird; they are nearly identical. walkaroundthe chevrolet is available in two basic levels, camaro and camaro z28. Furthermore, the 3800 v6 is available with an optional performance handling package that includes a limited-slip differential, dual exhaust, p235/55r16 tires on alloy wheels, quicker steering ratio and, if equipped with the automatic transmission, a 3. 42:1 axle instead of the standard 3. 08:1 ratio. There is also a sport appearance package that includes alloy wheels and special body trim. those wanting more performance can opt for the ls1 5. 7-liter v8-powered z28. Modified slightly from the engine developed for the new corvette, and rated at 305 hp and 335 lb.-ft. Of torque, this aluminum powerhouse makes the camaro a genuine high-performance car (especially if equipped with the six-speed manual transmission), that's capable of well over 150 mph, right off the showroom floor. standard with the z28 are the tires and wheels of the sport appearance package, a performance handling suspension, limited-slip differential and the all-important 155-mph speedometer. There isn't another car within $10,000, and doggone few within $20,000, that can stay with it. the camaro does an admirable job of keeping all this power hooked up to the pavement. The reason: its chassis features upper and lower control arms in front, which keep the tires in better contact with the road than the more popular struts. A live axle is used in the rear and it's one of the best live axles because it's well-located by a long torque arm, trailing links and a panhard rod. Springs are coils, and there are front and rear anti-roll bars. We'll even put in a few words here about the camaro with the 3. 8-liter v6. The mustang is also offered with a base 3. 8-liter v6 engine, but while the camaro v6 makes 200 hp and revs to 6000 rpm, the mustang runs out of wind at 150 hp and won't come close to 6000 rpm. So, v8 to v8, or v6 to v6, the camaro (and the equivalent firebird), simply runs away from the mustang. interiorobviously, cars built low and sleek don't offer much excess interior room, and the camaro is no exception. The camaro is more difficult to get into and out of than the taller, more upright mustang. Open the rear hatch and there's a modest bin that fits behind the rear axle, and a higher shelf behind the rear seats. The rear seats fold forward to accommodate a decent amount of luggage room. The engine is positioned so that most of it is behind the centerline of the front wheels, thus placing it in the category of front mid-engine design. This distributes the weight more evenly. The result is a car that bends into corners with eagerness and grip and accelerates away from those same corners hard and true. Compared to the mustang, the camaro will feel lower, wider, more stuck to the road and more responsive. Driven conservatively the ride is well controlled and smooth enough for 'sports car' expectations. Driven with more enthusiasm, the z28 has exceptional directional stability and good feedback through the wheel. It turns into corners with linear precision. Most people have never driven a car that runs this hard. The engine revs and pulls with gusto all the way to redline. The chassis is balanced well and contributes to the commendable driving experience. But as good as the z28's chassis is, the heart of the car is really that corvette engine. summarythis kind of car isn't for everyone. 2008 lincoln mkz review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. In style and engineering, it's an upscale sibling to the ford fusion and mercury milan. the mkz began a new direction for lincoln: luxury vehicles designed to engage the driver. The mkz succeeds, managing the difficult trick of delivering a ride that is generally comfortable with handling that makes it interesting and gratifying to drive quickly on a challenging country road. the mkz is powered by a strong, 263-hp v6 driving the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available. And mkz's major standard equipment compares favorably with the best cars in this class. for 2008, lincoln has made several popular options standard, including heated and cooled leather seats, and sirius satellite radio. New standard features include a reverse sensing system and a hands-free, voice-activated communications and entertainment system that ford calls sync. overall, the mkz is well rounded. It's suitable for day-to-day commuting even on the midwest's broken streets, comfy for long-distance cruising on an interstate, and playful during a quick trip along a two-lane road through the mountains. It has plenty of power, but it uses regular fuel and delivers decent gas mileage. Surprisingly, however, the mkz does not offer electronic stability control. the mkz has collected some impressive accolades. Among them: when it was introduced as a 2007 model, it ranked highest in the j. Power and associates initial quality study for premium cars. Its 3. 5-liter v6 has been named one of ward's 10 best engines. Its thx ii-certified stereo was voted best audio by pc magazine. And its navigation system was ranked no. 1 in j. A tire pressure monitor has also been added for 2008. the mkz achieves acceptable ratings in heavy frontal and side-impact crash tests conducted by the insurance institute for highway safety, on a scale of good, acceptable, marginal, and poor. Some of the mkz's major competitors have good ratings in these tests. The mkz lacks electronic stability control. walkaroundthe lincoln mkz is styled in a conservative fashion, creating a prim, proper effect. The one exception is its wide chrome grille, which lincoln is using across its line to instill brand identity. Lincoln's wide, split-waterfall motif first appeared on the 1938 zephyr, so it's certainly appropriate for the mkz, originally launched as the lincoln zephyr, to wear it. the lincoln is brightened by its jewelry: quad-beam halogen headlights (with hid units optional), bright-metal accents at the beltline and on the mirror caps, and chromed exhaust tips. Handsome 17-inch wheels contribute to mkz's purposeful stance. interiorthe lincoln mkz cabin is comfortable and luxurious. The interior is pleasant, convenient and reasonably quiet. the cabin looks more upscale than that in the ford fusion and mercury milan, which share the mkz's underpinnings and some major mechanical components. The trim plastics look best in lighter colors. All in all, the mkz interior doesn't come across as shameless luxury as much as comfortably well-to-do, which is pretty much the standard for this class. the controls for heating, cooling and the stereo are all easy to find and use. Storage is adequate. the navigation system works well. The video screen is smaller than many, but it's easy to figure out without excessive reliance on the owner's manual. In short, it's comparable to other cars in its class. trunk capacity is rated at 15. 8 cubic feet, which is more than many cars in this class. The trunk lid swings high for easy access, and the fold-down rear seat allows some flexibility for hauling more. forward and over-the-shoulder visibility is acceptable. The high rear deck limits visibility immediately behind the mkz when backing up. The reverse-sensing system helps with this, providing an audible gauge of the distance between the mkz and whatever is behind it. driving impressionthe lincoln mkz comes from a 3. 5-liter v6, introduced for 2007, that delivers 263 horsepower, on par with the nissan maxima and infiniti g35. Moreover, the lincoln engine delivers full power on regular 87-octane gas, and was epa-rated at 18/28 mpg city/highway. This new engine benefits from the efficiency of a six-speed automatic transmission. the lincoln's 3. 5-liter engine delivers great acceleration in the instances most drivers need it. It doesn't turn the mkz into a rocket, but acceleration is more than acceptable for any reasonable task, including a quick merge onto a busy interstate. And it's satisfying just to feel the rush of power. The duratec 3. 5-liter is smooth and fairly quiet. the six-speed automatic cannot be shifted manually, feature some drivers like. Moreover, lincoln could improve the control program for a quicker response at low speeds. From a dead stop, or when traveling at 50 mph, the transmission works great. But at 10 mph, it's a different story. Creeping out of a parking lot, for example, the transmission will shift up a gear or two, apparently to save fuel. But when the driver approaches the street and hits the gas for a hole in traffic, the transmission doesn't want to kick back down to first gear. The mkz bogs a bit, and the anticipated acceleration isn't there. we like the handling of this car. On a rough surface the mkz does a reasonably good job of shielding its occupants from broken pavement and poorly repaired potholes. But the engineers were clever enough to combine that ride with handling that is reassuring and satisfying. Despite having much of its weight up front, the all-wheel-drive model we tested was reasonably quick to change direction and head into a turn, lacking the stubborn, nose-heavy feeling of some all-wheel-drive cars. the steering has a of weight to it for positive, satisfying response. Yet it doesn't feel heavy when pulling into a parking spot. And there's no loose, sloppy feeling when the mkz is pointed straight ahead.
