2009 saturn aura review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Solid sedan with european roots. introductionthe saturn aura is an excellent choice among midsize sedans. It's modern and fresh, with european character and aesthetic flair. Taut and responsive, it drives like a european family sedan, perhaps because it rides on a german opel platform. The cabin is tastefully done and laid out and all the controls work very well. A range of engines and drivetrains is available for fuel economy or performance.  for 2009, aura emphasizes fuel efficiency. This is a smooth, sophisticated engine that makes the aura a very enjoyable car to drive. Brakes, suspension and powertrain all work together to respond to the driver's wishes. Compared with the cars in its own price class, such as the honda accord, toyota camry and ford fusion, the aura is well equipped with safety and comfort features. All are front-wheel drive. Hybrids with the preferred package can add the premium trim package 990), which includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, leather upholstery and heated front seats. A convenience package for xr 590) adds heated exterior mirrors, remote starter, auto-dimming inside rearview and outside driver's mirror, compass, and universal garage door opener; a similar package for xe 840) adds heated front seats as well. Available on xr and xr v6 is a six-way power passenger seat 400); a 6-cd changer 300); and an advanced audio package 425) comprising an eight-speaker, 240-watt audio system with rear-seat audio controls with two wireless headphones. All models offer a power sunroof with sunshade 800), premium floor mats 80-100), woodgrain interior trim 75), and an engine-block heater 75). The new all season package 290) includes rubber floor mats and molded splash guards, but is not offered on the hybrid. Passive safety features that come standard on all models include front seat belts with pretensioners and load-limiters, dual advanced front air bags, front seat-mounted side-impact air bags (for torso protection in a side impact), and front- and rear-seat curtain air bags (for head protection in a rollover or side impact). The saturn aura shares the same platform as the saab 9-3 and the european-market opel vectra. The aura shares styling cues with the opel. The saturn aura is front-wheel drive and rides on a 112-inch wheelbase.  in front, the aura features a broad grille with a thick chrome insert flanked by almond-shaped, multi-element headlamp units. The nicely sculpted front bumper houses tiny fog lamps on the xr v6. With big engines and front-wheel drive, the aura has a requisitely long nose, but thanks to nice tapering of the bumpers, it doesn't look disproportionately front-heavy.  the body sides are clean and tastefully sculpted, with a healthy bit of chrome detailing on the window trim. The xr takes this a step further with bright door handles. The aura rides on a long wheelbase, which contributes to an elegant, planted appearance. A power moonroof with sun shade is optional.  auras xe models ride on 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers. Xr upgrades to 17-inch alloy rims and, for 2009, so does the hybrid. Xr v6 comes with 18-inch alloy wheels.  the rear end is dominated by glitzy, high-mounted tail lamps that mirror the almond shape of the headlamps and incorporate two strips of fast-illuminating led brake lights. Savvy observers can spot a 2009 edition because the model name has moved out of the bright panel at the base of the trunk lid and onto the paintwork just above it. The bright panel itself is gone from the 2009 xr v6, for a cleaner look we like. We're less thrilled with the new hybrid decals at the top of the hybrid model's windshield and rear window. Secondary controls are shared with other gm models.  the front seats offer reasonable support for most people, though we would like to see better lumbar support. We found the fabric upholstery to be of high quality. The quality of the xr's leather seemed marginal, however, with the only exception being the cool-looking moroccan brown option featuring uniquely grained, embossed leather seating inserts. The available eight-way power adjustments for the driver made it easier to get comfortable than in the standard seats. The steering wheel tilts and telescopes, though it feels one size too large for this car. The front-seat elbow rest cleverly extends into the b-pillar for an additional 1. 6 inches of elbow room, to accommodate taller drivers who slide the seat rearward. The cover for the center console slides fore and aft for comfortable elbow resting on the inboard side. Outward vision through the windshield and side windows is good. A trip computer/vehicle information display is nestled in the speedometer, and has a real-time fuel economy function. Therefore, only one function (the trip odometer, standard odometer, fuel economy, the gear indicator for the manual mode for the six-speed automatic, and so on) can be viewed at any given time.  interior trim is mixed in quality but pleasingly designed, with padded materials covering the curvaceous dash top and door panels, but less impressive hard plastic most everywhere else. There are other materials as well, including generous swaths of silvery metallic or wood-grained plastic trim, made more attractive by chrome details in many well-placed locations. We would like to say that these materials are up to snuff compared with toyota, honda and even hyundai, but in truth, they're not quite there. The last bastion of traditional american luxury car values. introductioncompletely redesigned and re-engineered last year, the lincoln town car is softer and quieter than any of the european luxury cars. Lincoln mercury has one of the highest loyalty and repurchase rates in the industry. Even before that happened, this newest generation town car was being designed at ford's california facility. And it shows with a trimmer look and rounded lines that replace the square, formal lines of the previous generation.  for 1999, side air bags have been added to the town car. A new alpine stereo comes standard, and executive models come with new door trim and a new rear center armrest with cupholders. Five new paint colors are available.  cadillac's deville is the direct competition for the town car. But there are a number of smaller european and japanese cars in the $40,000 luxury sedan bracket: acura 3. 5 rl, bmw 528i, lexus gs 400, and mercedes-benz e-class. walkaroundthere are several versions of town car to choose from, including the $40,995 signature series and the $43,495 cartier series. (there's a $38,995 executive series that's sold primarily as a fleet car.)  this is an american luxury car with the time-honored formula: rear-wheel drive, v8 engine, smooth, quiet ride, seating for six, a huge trunk, and lots of luxury amenities.  from its complex-reflector headlamps and pursed-lips grille back to its chrome license plate surround and big corner-mounted taillamps, the town car has been redesigned for the 21st century. The package comes with the more powerful 220-horsepower v8 engine with dual exhaust, larger 235/60r16 tires on unique 16-inch alloy wheels, a special torque converter, a 3. 55:1 rear-axle ratio, and revised springs, shock absorbers and stabilizer bars. Those suspension bits are designed to provide improved handling and a sporty ride; the higher numerical rear-axle ratio boosts acceleration performance. The smaller analog instrument cluster features a centered speedometer flanked by fuel and temperature gauges.  two small display screens on either side of the speedometer serve as the message center and compass. The system includes a redundant speedometer display, but no tachometer. The radio face has been replaced with larger and easier to use buttons and controls. Below the radio is the control center for the climate control system. Nothing is difficult to reach or understand, and there is so much available width that the controls are not crowded.  the town car's front and rear passenger compartments are very spacious. A new rear pillar design makes the rear seat cozier than the one in the old car. The big, thick seats are comfortable and the power front bucket seats offer lumbar support and two-position memory. The steering wheel contains buttons for cruise control and the sound system.  interior noise has been reduced significantly over the previous model. Rearview mirrors have been designed to generate much less wind noise. Thicker glass, triple seals on the doors, and redesigned pillars all help to further reduce noise. driving impressiontown car owners will notice greatly improved steering and handling response. Ford has redesigned the steering system with more expensive components that yield improved steering precision and feel. The air suspension system boasts new twin-tube shock absorbers. Another more expensive solution is the rear suspension that uses a watts linkage between the axle housing and the frame designed to improve both handling and ride quality. Trailing arms have been redesigned to be parallel to the frame.  all this adds up to a much more pleasant ride. The 1999 town car feels glued to the road in a way that the previous-generation could not match on its best day. Handling is much more predictable in lane-change maneuvers, without the momentary indecisiveness that characterized the old car. Equipped with a 282 cubic-inch engine, it just doesn't accelerate like a $40,000 car should. Its chief competition has 275 horsepower, a palpable difference.  transmission feel and function are greatly improved over the old automatic, with quicker, more positive shifts. The full-time all-speed traction control system can be switched off for climbing out of snow banks or other special situations.  the town car's brakes have been upgraded with bigger, thicker front discs and twin-piston calipers. With 25 percent more swept area, the brakes are much less likely to fade away when hot. Abs is standard. summarythe lincoln town car is an attractive, appealing car, with its huge cabin and trunk. Though it lacks the power of some of its japanese competitors, the powertrain is smooth and refined. The styling is more sensual and modern than any previous town car. Chevy's in the game with this solid compact. introductionwith its expressive styling and general all-around competence, the chevrolet cobalt competes effectively against the honda civic, toyota corolla, and ford focus, an impressive achievement, considering how long the competition has dominated this game.  the cobalt is the quietest, most refined small car gm has ever built. It's based on a strong, stiff platform, a key element for crisp handling and as smooth ride. The ss models use this to maximum advantage resulting in a dynamic driving experience. Quick, responsive handling and brisk acceleration performance along with a sporty sounding exhaust note make the supercharged coupe entertaining to drive, a sport compact that can more than hold its own in the class.  new for 2006 are ss sedan and coupe models with normally aspirated engines. These new ss models fit between the lt and ss supercharged models. Three different engines are available with suspensions tuned to match.  the ls, lt, and ltz models are powered by a 145-horsepower 2. 2-liter engine and use the fe1 suspension.  the ls 13,900) sedan and coupe come standard with air conditioning, automatic headlights, electric rear defogger, tilt steering column, cd player, and a driver information center. They have wind-up windows, manually operated mirrors, and cloth upholstery with height-adjustable front seats and a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat. Ls models have a body-color grille and door handles and come with front disc/rear drum brakes and 15-inch wheels and tires. The ltz sedan 18,400) is a premium model that comes standard with the automatic, upgraded audio and premium trim.  ss 18,200) coupe and sedan get a 171-horsepower 2. 4-liter engine, the fe3 sports suspension, 17-inch wheels and high performance tires. It also gets upgraded cloth, special body-color trim and other upgrades. The sport package 595) includes a brushed metal trim package for the dashboard, white-faced gauges, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, rear spoiler and 16-inch alloy wheels with pirelli tires.  safety features include dual-stage front air bags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners, rear center shoulder belts, and the latch child seat retention system. All but the ls models come standard with anti-lock brakes (abs). Head curtain side air bags 395) designed to provide head protection are optional. But with its single-bar grille and bowtie emblem, it looks like a proper chevrolet small car right down to its shoes and socks.  body panel fits are extremely tight. So tight, in fact, that there are no rubber trim gaskets around the compound complex headlamps.  the cobalt coupe bears a resemblance in its shape to the old cavalier it replaced, while the sedan features a more modern roofline sweep. The ss coupe and sedan models have a small rear spoiler, while the ss supercharged coupe carries a huge, tall rear spoiler than says it's a serious sport compact.  cobalt is longer, wider and lower than most of its direct competitors and its interior dimensions and trunk capacity are comparable for the class. interiorinside the cobalt, the design theme is simple and straightforward. Materials are decent and the fit and finish is good and comparable for the class. There's just enough chrome trim here and there on knobs and instruments to brighten things up without a lot of glare from the shiny parts. Instruments are large, well placed, and easy to read, with nice graphic treatment throughout.  cobalt uses different seats in the different trim levels, each with detail changes in foam, padding and trim. We found plenty of fore/aft and rake adjustment for a 6-foot, 4-inch driver, plus seat height adjustment with a ratcheting handle. The lt seats were very comfortable and grabbed us in the fast corners exactly where we needed to be grabbed and held. Even better were the leather-trimmed seats in the ss supercharged.  the available pioneer seven-speaker sound system with the delphi am/fm/cd and xm satellite radio delivers good sound and includes a huge subwoofer mounted on the left side trunk wall.  the heating, ventilation and defroster system worked quickly and intuitively.  the ls comes with manually operated windows. The urethane steering wheel that comes on ls and lt models feels cheap. The leather-wrapped wheels on ltz and ss models are much nicer.  the sedan trunk is wide and deep with a low liftover height, and almost 14 cubic feet of capacity, more than competitive in the class, though the opening to the trunk seems relatively small. Cobalt does not use space-eating gooseneck hinges on its decklid, opting instead for simple outside corner hinges and two hydraulic assist struts. The coupe has a very small trunk opening, making it difficult to fit a thick suitcase. A 60/40-split, fold-down rear seat with a trunk pass-through feature adds utility to both sedan and coupe. driving impressionthe chevrolet cobalt is quite pleasant to drive, especially the ss models. It's quiet for a car that retails for less than $20,000. Chevrolet put considerable effort into special door seals, sandwich steel panels, thick carpets and pads, noise blockers and noise absorbers throughout the front, middle and rear of the car. The brakes seemed a little mushy on the ls, which comes with rear drum brakes.  the 2. 2-liter engine, which is rated at 145 horsepower, was a bit of a disappointment. It was smooth, but never felt truly powerful until it was revving very high. We like the way it sounded when it revved and, paired with the manual gearbox, it offered responsive performance. summarythe chevrolet cobalt will satisfy the needs of drivers looking for economy of price, economy of operation, and a nice, quiet ride. We think it's a handsome, well-equipped car. The standard engine could offer more responsive low-end power, however. The cobalt ls and lt models are the epitome of driving excitement, however. 2002 dodge durango review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Not too big, not too small, and very rugged. introductiondodge durango is handsome, powerful, versatile, and refined. Based on the dakota pickup, durango is smaller and more maneuverable than the full-size suvs, such as the ford expedition and chevrolet tahoe. Dodge durango has found a comfortable niche that ford and gm missed.  with theater-style seating that gives rear-seat passengers a view of the road ahead, and other interior creature comforts, the durango is a smart choice for large families. It's also a good choice for people who tow light to medium-sized trailers. For 2002, dodge has added a high-value trim level called sxt with unique graphite trim. Two engines are available: a 4. 7-liter v8 and a 5. 9-liter v8.  five trim levels are available. Seventeen-inch wheels with 275/60r17 tires and a sport-tuned suspension improve handling, while body-colored wheel flares help set the r/t apart. walkarounddodge durango doesn't look like other suvs. It makes a bolder statement with its muscular styling. It looks sportier than the ford or gm competition and many of the imports. Durango shares its front end with the dakota pickup. The grille's prominent bull's-eye slats instantly identify this suv as part of the dodge family. interioreight people can fit in the durango (six comfortably), with theater seating designed to give everyone a view out the front. The back half of the roof is raised nearly two inches to increase rear-seat headroom and visibility. This raised portion is cleverly disguised with a roof rack.  second-row seats are quite comfortable, offering plenty of headroom and adequate legroom. Stable cup holders and rear heating/air conditioning controls add to comfort. Third-row seats (standard in slt, slt plus, and r/t) are surprisingly comfortable for two people, who enjoy adequate legroom by tucking their feet under the second-row seats in front of them. Getting in and out of that third row is easy: flip a lever and the second-row seatback folds forward, then tumbles out of the way, allowing a quick entry or exit.  durango's interior was re-designed for 2001, including a new instrument panel, interior trim, center and overhead consoles, carpeting and steering wheel. A dual-zone climate control system is standard, and slt and r/t models provide auxiliary heat for the third-row seats.  when it's time to haul cargo, the tailgate lifts up and out of the way, and the two rows of seats easily fold down to provide a large, relatively flat floor. A trout bum could sleep back there. All durangos have a long, narrow storage compartment under the floor just inside the rear liftgate, with enough space for the jack, flares and other roadside equipment.  overall, the interior design is executed well. Matching plastic trim provides an organic appearance. The seats appear plain, but they are comfortable. Carpeting extends to the backs of the rear headrests, which do not have to be removed when the seats are folded down. That's a convenient, timesaving feature.  the driving position is comfortable, with good visibility over an attractive, rounded hoodline. Instruments are big and easy to read, although the speedometer appears busy with has marks for every 2-1/2 mph. Power outside mirrors are easy to adjust with a big knob on the driver's door. Cup-holders and storage trays are nicely designed, while a digital compass and other useful readouts beckon from overhead. Large buttons on the leather-wrapped steering wheel operate one of the better cruise controls we've encountered. driving impressionthe durango is enjoyable to drive. Equipped with the big 5. 9-liter magnum v8, it always feels willing to get down the road quickly, with excellent throttle response and quick acceleration. Shifting is smooth and responsive and transmission ratios are well matched to the healthy torque of the 5. 9-liter v8.  it handles well when driven briskly down narrow roads with tight corners and sweeping turns. The durango feels a bit sportier than other sport-utilities, particularly the bigger ones. Steering is precise and the suspension provides excellent transient response, responding crisply when dodging quickly from left to right and back again. On unpaved roads, the durango provides predictable handling. We never bottomed the suspension out in spite of bouncing around in the rough stuff.  durango's competent off-road capability and on-road handling response don't come as a free lunch, however. We found ride quality on downtown washington's crumbling infrastructure a bit on the harsh side. Ride quality on rough pavement is not as smooth as it is in, say, the new ford explorer or gmc envoy.  as mentioned, two v8 engines are available. It uses a modern overhead-cam configuration, as opposed to the 5. 9-liter engine's traditional overhead-valve design. Engine and transmission talk to each other and choose the optimum ratio based on driver input and load conditions. Most often, it will choose the numerically higher ratio when starting off from rest, or when towing; and a numerically lower ratio as a more ideal kick-down or passing gear.  new for 2002, is a similarly engineered five-speed automatic, with two overdrive ratios and again two different second-gear ratios. That's considerably more robust than the just-released 2003 expedition's standard 4. 6-liter overhead-cam v8 (232 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque), and not far behind expedition's optional 5. 4-liter unit, with its 260 horsepower and 350 pound-feet. The dodge 5. 9-liter v8 also compares favorably with the chevrolet tahoe's 5. 3-liter v8 (285 horsepower, but only 325 pound-feet of torque). Fuel economy for the 5. 9-liter dodge is 12/17 mpg city/highway, as rated by the epa. The durango can nearly tow with the big boys, too. With the 5. 9-liter engine and 3. 92 axle, it's capable of pulling a 7,550-pound trailer. Chevy's tahoe is rated to pull 7,900 pounds, and ford's expedition is rated for 8,900 pounds. Both transfer cases rely on shift-on-the-fly lever mounted on the floor. It's not suitable for dry. summarydodge durango is practical, intelligently designed and easy to operate. It also compares favorably to the full-size ford expedition, chevrolet tahoe, and gmc yukon.  the durango cuts a distinctive appearance among sport-utility vehicles. 2003 chevrolet impala review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Modern efficiency with a link to the past. introductionthe chevrolet impala is a mid-size sedan packing nearly full-size family room. It even feels like a big luxury car. The impala handles well and accelerates quickly when equipped with the optional 3. 8-liter v6.  by any other name, the impala would be an impressive, significant car. But chevrolet chose to honor an icon of the 1960s, not only with the impala name, but with key visual cues as well. Impala is calculated to push the nostalgia button for a certain generation.  from 1958-65, impala meant the flashiest full-size chevrolet, a real working-man's cadillac, tame in its base form but offering performance options to match its aggressive looks. However, when ordered with the optional 3. 8-liter v6 the impala is quick. The chevy impala feels more responsive than the six-seat sedans from toyota, dodge, ford and buick. The more up-market ls comes with gm's proven and highly competent 3. 8-liter v6, producing 200 horsepower. The 3. 8-liter engine is available as an option 995) on the base model. Remote keyless entry has been added for 2003.  the ls sport appearance package 1495) adds brake cooling ducts, a strut-tower brace, a tire-inflation monitor, and extra gauges to a graphite-finish instrument panel; the package is distinguished by embroidered logos on door panels and floor mats, a body-color taillight panel, and chromed exhaust tips.  xm satellite radio is optional on both base and ls. Xm's sound quality is remarkably close to a compact disc, according to chevrolet.  onstar is standard on ls and optional on base impalas. Gm's onstar is a customer-service network linked via satellite. The impala is significantly shorter (9 inches) than a dodge intrepid, yet it's slightly larger in total interior volume.  the impala's most distinctive styling cues are its headlight and taillight clusters, which use a unique combination of round lights clearly visible from behind trapezoidal covers. Again, credit the high roofline with relatively vertical sides. The impala's designers also carefully rearranged the rear bulkhead, and moved the seats slightly outboard. They feel like bucket seats. But the front-center passenger has to straddle the split between the seats. Controls are logical, work smoothly, and are easy to see. They follow the function of those in the smaller chevy malibu, but they're bigger. Individual temperature controls allow the driver and front-seat passenger to create their own microclimate.  the chevy impala boasts more interior volume than the dodge intrepid, but the impala's rear seat area is shorter on useable legroom. Still, the impala is better in this respect than the ford taurus or the even the full-size ford crown victoria. The impala's rear seating position is comfortable and relatively high, which makes it easy to get in and out. There are three shoulder belts in the rear, as well as latch child-seat tethers. In the ls, the rear seat is split 60/40 and folds down to allow bulky items to protrude from the trunk, handy for trips to home depot.  the headliner is nicely padded, to meet the federal head-injury standards. A seat-mounted side-impact airbag is standard on ls and available as part of several option packages on the base model.  . driving impressionthe impala feels like a big luxury car, even compared to a ford crown victoria or toyota avalon. The toyota feels bland by comparison.  the view out of the impala is good, helped particularly by the small quarter windows that split the rear pillars. The creases on the hood are useful for judging just where the front of the car is, which in turn is handy for parking a big car in compact spaces. The rear deck lid seems high, however, so care is required when backing up.  handling is surprisingly quick and sharp. This is not the wallowing, live-axle barge from the 1960s. One reason is the impala's extruded aluminum engine-cradle subframe, a first for the industry says chevrolet, which isolates vibration while allowing for a more rigid structure. A monster dashboard bulkhead made of light and strong magnesium further enhances to the impala's rigidity, giving the car a robust feel. The engine cradle and dashboard structure lock the steering shaft down tightly, so there are no excess wiggly movements. Chevy says a novel link between the steering column and the steering gear contributes to better on-center feel at the wheel. Both impala models benefit from anti-roll bars front and rear, hardware associated with sports sedans.  on the road, the steering provides good feedback, better than the toyota avalon's steering. The ls we tested felt particularly precise, with its quicker steering ratio.  likewise, the brake pedal feels firm and responsive. Chevy claims the impala can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7. 7 seconds, quick for this class. It honors the heritage of the original impala, without reviving the old car's excessive bulk.
