New shelby model adds supercharged muscle. introductionthe mustang remains one of the most widely recognized, respected, and desired nameplates in the automobile business. The ford mustang defined the pony-car segment in 1964; plymouth's barracuda may have beaten ford to the showroom by 16 days, but it was the mustang that set the sales records. The 'cuda is gone now, and so are the camaro, firebird, cougar, javelin, challenger, and every other would-be rival, leaving ford's pony to prance alone. At least for now.  for 2007, the 210-hp mustang v6 and 300-hp mustang gt are joined by the new 500-hp supercharged shelby gt500, offering its own look, tuning, and equipment.  available in fastback coupe or convertible body styles, the mustang v6 models make nice, stylish cruisers. The gt is an absolute hoot to drive, making all the right sounds, hanging onto corners tenaciously, and delivering thrilling acceleration performance. The shelby gt500 adds to the fun with its near-corvette performance. It's quite tossable, making for good sport on gymkhanas, race tracks or back roads. It delivers the bold styling, rear-drive performance and affordability that have been mustang hallmarks for decades, but it's smoother and quieter and better built than older models.  its interior looks like a throwback from the '60s, but it's functional and well finished. Granted, interior space is limited, especially given its exterior dimensions; and the back seat might better be described as a package shelf.  the ford mustang is an american success story. It holds true to an idea that still appeals to people of all ages, decades after the original was launched. Antilock brakes and traction control are standard on gts and optional on v6 models. Front passenger side-impact airbags 380) are optional on all models, so be sure to order them as they are designed to offer torso protection in a side impact. walkaroundnothing says modern american sporty car better than this latest mustang. Its long hood and short rear deck capitalize on 40 years of pony-car heritage. The current mustang features classic design cues that have defined mustangs since the 1960s: c-scoops in the sides, three-element tail lamps and a galloping horse badge in the center of the grille. Its menacing shark-like nose is reminiscent of the 1967-70 models.  yet the mustang follows modern trends by offering ever-larger wheels, including two distinct 18-inch wheel designs for the gt. The modern mustang is based on the same mechanical platform as the jaguar s-type, albeit with some cost-trimming measures such as its live-axle rear suspension.  relative to previous mustangs, everything under the car has been substantially upgraded. The brakes are bigger by nearly 20 percent. A completely new front and rear suspension yields a much quieter, smoother ride as well as much more precise steering during hard cornering. New engines deliver performance with efficiency. Optional antilock brakes bundled with traction control give any a fighting chance in bad situations.  all mustang engines are secured to the body with hydraulic mounts, which absorb and counteract vibration and pulsing. By adapting ideas and components from luxury cars, ford has given the current mustang a level of sophistication its predecessors never had. Yet the mustang heritage of low-cost performance and flashy styling has not been compromised one iota.  like its muscle-era namesake, the shelby gt500 stands out with a unique front grille and bumper fascia, providing both a functionally larger and unimpeded air intake, while reducing air flow under the body. A unique engine hood with dual air-extraction slits is domed to clear the larger, 5. 4-liter engine. Carroll shelby's signature striking-cobra emblem glowers from the gas cap and from a characteristically off-center position in the grille. The whole package rides on unique 18-inch rims sporting ford's svt (special vehicle team) logo. Just as in 1968, coupes are topped by le mans-style racing stripes. They look terrific, though we're not sure they should carry down onto the rear bumper where they compete with the rear license plate.  shelby convertibles feature a premium fabric for the top. interiorthe mustang interior is as blatantly throwback as the exterior, and nearly as well done. It's sporty and crisp in appearance and straightforward in function.  there's a heavy dose of 1967 mustang inside, with the dash divided into distinct right and left pods, blended with modern touches. Chrome-ringed air vents align across the dash, precisely in line with the gauges, and the steering wheel has three spokes with a center hub marked by the horse-and-tricolor-bars logo. While some of the materials have a cost-saving look and feel, the package is not bad given the high style and price of entry. Speaking of brightening, however, there's enough shiny metal on this car's dash and steering wheel to create some glare problems for drivers on sunny days (just like the old days). Another interior upgrade package, with satin or dark-finish aluminum inserts instead of chrome, goes a long way toward eliminating traces of cheapness.  these are the good old days in terms of roominess in the mustang. Optional diesel engine expands lineup. introductionjeep promotes the grand cherokee as a full-size suv, but that's only partly true. In its physical dimensions and towing capacity, grand cherokee is a mid-size, like the ford explorer or chevrolet trailblazer. At the base level, it's priced like a mid-size. It isn't even jeep's biggest suv, as that honor now belongs to the commander. Yet it is instantly recognizable as a jeep. Inside, the atmosphere is light, comfortable, and enveloping, with lots of seat adjustment, excellent outward vision around relatively slim windshield post. All switches and controls are clearly are labeled and easy to find and use. In back is nearly 70 cubic feet of cargo space.  anyone familiar with grand cherokees of just a few years ago will find that the chassis is now far more sophisticated, giving the current model much better handling than that of pre-2005 models. Its turning radius is tighter, too, good for crowded parking lots.  a wide range of modern engines is available. The 5. 7-liter hemi v8 is particularly good for towing or driving at higher elevations. The high-performance srt8 model has a 420-horsepower 6. 1-liter hemi and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than five seconds. The smaller, 4. 7-liter overhead-cam v8 works quite well, too, and is offered in most states with e85 flex-fuel capability, meaning it can run on gasoline or up to 85 percent ethanol. Even the standard overhead-cam v6 is quite competent. For 2006, jeep expanded the grand cherokee model range with the luxurious overland and the high-performance srt8. For 2007, jeep has added a number of refinements. Most significantly, side-curtain air bags with roll detection are now standard on all models, and all models now offer the parkview reversing camera and active turn signals. Standard tires are wider. Remote start is standard on limited and overland, and optional on laredo and srt8. Cloth upholstery is standard. Air conditioning comes standard, along with one-touch power windows, power locks with remote keyless entry, eight-way power driver's seat, am/fm/cd audio with auxiliary input jack, driver information center, 60/40 split folding rear seat, an engine immobilizer, water-resistant storage compartment, tire pressure monitor and 17-inch wheels. Platinum accents highlight the exterior, and the front sill guards are now brushed stainless. Overland 4wd 42,690) adds quadra-drive ii.  the 3. 0-liter diesel engine is optional on laredo, limited, and overland, with 2wd or 4wd, but was not available for earlier production models.  the srt8 40,105) comes with a 6. 1-liter hemi rated 420 horsepower, a lowered suspension and its own electronic all-wheel-drive system. Distinctive bumper fascias and 20-inch wheels make srt8 instantly identifiable. Inside are sport seats, special trim, and a level of standard features roughly analogous to the limited's. Options can bring an srt8 nearly up to the overland level of comfort and convenience.  options include a rear-seat dvd entertainment system 1,200); a sunroof package 800); various trailer tow groups 180-255); uconnect hands-free communication system 275); parksense rear park assist 255); and the more sophisticated parkview, which incorporates a camera, packaged with gps navigation 1,890 with 4wd, $2190 with 2wd). It's actually smaller than a ford explorer.  in appearance, the grand cherokee is modern and square-edged, with a fashionably high waistline and small side windows. The shape of the body is designed to protect the sides of the vehicle from potential road debris. Revised taillights distinguish the '07; otherwise grand cherokee's outside appearance hasn't changed significantly since '05.  while conventional suvs, such as the dodge durango, are built on a separate frame like a truck, the grand cherokee uses an unusual construction scheme jeep calls uniframe, a close marriage of a welded steel unit-body and underlying front and rear modules. This is an extremely sturdy and rigid concept developed back in jeep's days with unit-body pioneer american motors. The grand cherokee has earned a five-star safety rating in both front and side impact tests from the federal government.  new for 2007: the base-level laredo model has been dressed up a bit. Door handles are now body-color (instead of black), and the black bodyside moldings have been redesigned.  limited models still present a flashier appearance, with a chromed grille, bright inserts in the bumpers, and accent-color bodyside molding.  the overland is distinguished by mesh-texture grille inserts between its traditional vertical grille bars, which are platinum in finish; platinum accents also appear on the bumpers, side molding, roof-rack side rails, liftgate light bar, and side-view mirrors. Wheels are chromed, and the front sill guards are now brushed stainless.  jeep has reached deep into its heritage to revive the overland name. First built in 1903, the overland automobile was the earliest ancestor of the willys. Willys played an instrumental role in the development and production of the world war ii-era jeep, but was also the first automaker to seriously envision a civilian market for a military-style utility vehicle. The willys jeep debuted in 1946 and had its name shortened to just-plain jeep in the early 1960s. Although the jeep brand has passed through several owners since then, its lineage remains unbroken.  the srt8 has a monochrome look all its own, relieved by bright trim at the belt level and bodyside and accented by enormous five-spoke, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels. Functional air ducts in its more bluff front bumper fascia improve brake cooling. Srt8 is available only in bright silver, brilliant black or inferno red. In all grand cherokees, the two-tone, dark-over-light theme set by the instrument panel flows into the door trim.  the handbrake lever has a spindly, low-quality feel to it, however.  new for 2007: the finish on the upper panel has been improved. The laredo has been upgraded here for '07, with the same chrome gauge rings that used to be exclusive to the limited, plus chrome-accented hvac controls and a matching-color bezel (replacing black).

New coupe and hardtop convertible join the sedan. introductionthe pontiac g6 lineup has been expanded for 2006. While the g6 doesn't offer the refinement or attention to detail of its japanese rivals, it's an alternative worth considering for shoppers in the mid-size car market. (the g6 replaces the grand am, which has been discontinued.)  the g6 sedan line has been expanded for 2006 as well, with multiple engine and trim levels available. We found the g6 has good road manners even when driven hard, benefits of its long wheelbase and european-designed architecture. The sedan is roomy and plush with excellent overall function and its price point has made it a popular choice as a mid-size sedan. A panoramic roof is available on sedans, with panels that slide rearward creating a sunroof large enough for the back seat riders to enjoy an open-air experience. The gt models come standard with the v6, abs, and 17-inch wheels and tires. A manual six-speed wide-ratio transaxle is optional on gtp sedan and coupe models.  options include xm satellite radio 325), a standard-sized sunroof 800), remote starting 190), and chrome-finish 17-inch wheels 700). Various options packages are available, including a leather package for the gt and gtp 1,365). Basic traction assist is available on the base model, full-spectrum traction control on the gt, and traction control with the gm/delphi stabilitrak chassis control system will be available on the gtp. Onstar 695) is an excellent safety feature for its ability to summon help. We recommend opting for all this stuff. Head injuries are the leading cause of fatalities in side impacts. walkaroundwhen the g6 was introduced, pontiac was quick to point out that all of its future cars would incorporate cues from the g6, that it was the living expression of what all future pontiacs will look like and act like. So far, this has been true, with new pontiacs like the torrent reflecting the g6's clean, uncluttered styling.  gone are the massive side-cladding panels and standoff rear spoiler associated with pontiac. Instead, there is a single spear running down the sides of the g6 with an optional delicately integrated spoiler lip on the trailing edge of the decklid. Gtp models look similar to the gt, but with a standard spoiler chrome exhaust tips. The base version has almost no decoration at all, and is even a bit soulless in style when compared to the previous high-energy, hot-looking grand am, even duller than the honda accord.  the new 2006 coupe and convertible inject a little more excitement into the styling. The two share the same sleek profile, although the roof on the coupe looks much better integrated (for obvious reasons). The frameless windows are indexed, meaning that they automatically open 0. 25 inch when the doors are opened, and close again when the door is closed for a tight seal. From the rear, both cars feature narrow taillights and a sloping decklid that looks similar to the toyota solara coupe and convertible. We think it's an improvement over the blander styling of the sedan.  the pontiac g6 is built in michigan on gm's international epsilon platform, from parts and ideas used on the saab 9-3, opel vectra, chevrolet malibu sedan and malibu maxx wagonette, all introduced over the past two years.  all g6 models use the long wheelbase version of the epsilon platform (like the malibu maxx), which gives them ride and handling finesse, with a structural stiffness that helps the g6 achieve a 27. 3 hz bending frequency, a big number that ranks with most luxury cars. Pontiac says the car is designed with three major torque rings that add stiffness and strength without taking up too much space or adding weight. In addition to the torque rings, the g6 structure also uses high-strength steel for about 60 percent of underbody components and central tunnel. Rather than just a single layer of sheet steel, the tunnel has an extra piece of steel welded between it and the floor pan. The stiff body uses fully isolated front and rear subframes to carry the heavy stuff, and the front one is hydroformed for strength and light weight. These measures can be experienced in the smooth ride and sharp handling of the g6. interiorthe g6 interior is altogether different from the somewhat excitable, frenetic soft-plastic, fat-knob theme of the old grand ams. It is much darker, more modern, more european.  the sporty front bucket seats are made for body comfort and body retention in high-speed maneuvers, and they are very comfortable and thickly padded.  rear-seat space benefits from the relatively long wheelbase of 112. 3 inches. In the sedan, a 6-foot, 4-inch passenger can sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver with plenty of room. Those with tall friends or family may want to remember that the panoramic sunroof is powered by a motor that takes up a big chunk of headroom at the trailing edge of the sedan's headliner. Instruments and controls are presented in white on black (red at night). Every single knob and escutcheon has a chrome ring around it. Very tastful, and nicely presented, with small, conservative graphics on the faces and labels. It's remarkable how easily it works, and keeps conversation possible even at very high road speeds. It's an interesting feature and we recommend it.  the two-door convertible's top was engineered with karmann, which specializes in convertibles. The big top opens and closes within 30 seconds, storing under the truck lid and a hard tonneau cover when open.  the trunk is still accessible when the top is down, but space is reduced from a tiny 5. 8 cubic feet to a grocery-bag sized 1. 8 cubic feet. We found the sedan and coupe reasonably quiet around town. A few powertrain and road noises slipped in here and there, and there was some wind noise from the sharp-cornered mirror bodies. The ride is comfortable and smooth and the car tracks well. The more powerful gtp delivers more sprightly performance. The gm ecotec 2. 4-liter is from the same double overhead-cam engine family used in the saab 9-3, opel vectra, and chevrolet malibu. Anti-lock Brakes✔ Bucket Seats✔ Sunroof/Moonroof

The 2005 corolla line sees the addition of a sporty new xrs model, while the entire line gets some enhancements. All 2005 corollas feature a restyled front fascia and redesigned tail lamps.  a corolla le equipped with the optional leather interior almost feels like a miniature luxury car, a baby lexus. For 2005, the corolla le gets a lexus-like optitron center cluster meters along with fabric-covered sunvisors and center console lid. The new xrs model addresses this with a sports suspension and a 170-horsepower 1. 8-liter engine. This is in addition to optional anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, which improve steering control in an emergency stopping situation and enhance braking stability and effectiveness.  cloth or leather, the seats are comfortable and supportive. Big heating and air conditioning controls, simple, straightforward radio controls, well-designed cup holders, and plenty of cubbies for storing stuff make for a convenient interior. Corolla earns an epa-estimated 32/40 mpg city/highway when equipped with a manual transmission. Both the manual and the automatic transmissions offer smooth shifting, and the manual is very easy to operate. All models have a smooth, comfortable ride and responsive handling. It also gets wider 195/65r15 tires. Inside, the s gets a unique cloth interior, a sporty tachometer, chrome accents, and a nice leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The s model gets vertical seat-height adjustment, power door locks, power mirrors, and mirror-mounted map lights. The le adds remote keyless entry, power windows, halogen headlamps, and variable intermittent wipers. The le gets body-colored door handles, lacks the sporty body cladding of the s and looks the better for it. In place of the s model's sporty interior finish, the le gets wood-like trim and upgraded cloth seating surfaces. An optional leather package 900) is available for the le that gives the car a luxurious feel and includes cruise control. Aluminum wheels 390) are available, which improve the appearance of the le and should improve its handling slightly.  anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution 300) and side-impact airbags 250) are optional on most models, but can help avoid accidents or reduce injuries in the event of a crash. Other options include cruise control 250) and a sunroof 750).  the new corolla xrs 17,455) is powered by a 170-horsepower 1. 8-liter mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The xrs features a sport-tuned suspension with revised steering and 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels and michelin performance tires, an upgrade from the standard 15-inch wheels on all other corolla grades. Special interior and exterior trim distinguishes the xrs. Additional standard equipment includes anti-lock brakes with tire pressure monitors, front and rear disc brakes, and cruise control. walkaroundthe 2005 corolla features a newly designed front bumper, grille and headlamps. At the rear are subtly revised tail lamps.  the corolla looks like a small camry. Its ovoid headlights are similar and its rakish yet curved shape is in keeping with the newest camry and lexus es 300. Thick a-pillars at the front and thick c-pillars at the rear give the corolla a solid look while hefty bumpers add to its substantial appearance.  corolla comes standard with 15-inch steel wheels, but looks like it could do with larger wheels and tires that would fill out the wheel wells more effectively. For 2005, the value-driven ce and the premium le receive new wheel cover designs. Aluminum 15-inch wheels 390) are an option for le models.  at the rear, the corolla has a high trunk line in keeping with the car's high belt line. The taillights match the shape of the headlights nicely. Part of the taillight module is actually mounted in the trunk lid. This is fine except that the design causes the trunk lid to be narrower than it might be.  the doors have reasonably wide openings, which makes getting in and out easy. That's a benefit of the long wheelbase (102. 4 inches), which also means that the rear wheel wells do not protrude into the rear door as much as they do on some cars. Another benefit of a longer wheelbase is shorter overhangs at the front and rear (the distance from the wheels to the ends of the car). Short overhangs improve the car's looks, and the handling.  the 2005 corolla s receives a new front spoiler and fog lamps, and smoked headlamp masking. The s is further distinguished by its body-colored side rocker panels and rear skirt.  the xrs gets 16-inch wheels that visually fill the wheel wells better. Distinguishing the xrs are a rear color-keyed spoiler, a color-keyed bezel surrounding the grille, and unique badging. interiorthe corolla's interior doesn't feel like a small car nor does it feel cheap, like many compacts do. Big and tall people will find accommodations cramped, but shorter people often find the corolla fits them perfectly. There's plenty of front legroom and headroom and there's a decent amount of room in the back for two average-size adults. Although there are seat belts for a third rear-seat passenger, there's definitely a shortage of space for that person.  materials used in the seats appear classy with nice fit and finish. The leather seats have a luxurious soft pleated finish, while the center console and door panels have wood-like veneer trim. Okay it's fake but it's so well made that it looks more realistic than some real wood found in luxury cars. Both the le and s models get a sporty leather-wrapped steering wheel that adds to the enjoyment of driving.  the xrs gets sport seats, a silver-colored instrument cluster and switch plates, optitron meters, and a leather-like shift boot and leather shift knob.  the dashboard is nicely laid out with exemplary ergonomics and a finish comparable to that of more expensive cars. Its top surface sweeps across the width of the car in a slight s-curve and wraps into the door trim. Each side of the center console seamlessly blends up to the lower portion of the dash. The handle for the parking brake is located on the left of the center console so there's room for a small storage cubbyhole on the right. Storage spaces are quite generous with small pockets in each door and the glove box is large. Map lights on corolla s and le are mounted on the rearview mirror, not the ideal location.  three overlapping round gauges in the instrument pod contain a large speedometer, a smaller tachometer to the left and a water temperature gauge and fuel gauge mounted in a matching circle to the right. They incorporate red lettering on a plain white background and are easy to read at night. There's also an outside temperature readout on all models.  the rear seats split 60/40 to allow access from the trunk, though the opening is not that large, limiting pass-through with large cargo. The trunk is one of the biggest in this class. The gooseneck hinges intrude into the cargo space and can crush fragile items if they are in the way. Many auto manufacturers have switched to the scissor-type hinges that are located outside the storage space, though this design often results in a smaller trunk opening.  all in all, the interior has.

High performance, high practicality. introductionthe nissan altima is a roomy, comfortable, practical mid-size sedan. It's designed to please fewer people, but to please those few more intensely.  in this respect the altima reminds us more of mazda's mid-size sedan, the mazda6. Both offer stand-out styling; both surrender some refinement for gains in handling response. In other ways, however, they are diametric opposites: the lean and wiry mazda is the smallest car in this class, powered by a choice of high-winding engines; while the muscular nissan tops the class in both horsepower and wheelbase and is one of the roomiest cars in the class.  the altima delivers stunning acceleration when ordered with its 250-horsepower v6, essentially the same engine used in the nissan 350z and maxima. Punch it in any gear and it takes off, with nimble handling and brakes to match its thrust. The high-performance altima se-r adds 10 more horsepower and even more sports appeal. Altima's interior was redesigned for 2005, which resulted in an improved cabin. Altima also received some mild styling enhancements and a slight boost to its v6 for 2005. We strongly rec. walkaroundthe nissan altima is a big car by mid-size standards, bigger than the current toyota camry and honda accord. Its wheels are pushed to the far corners, giving it a long wheelbase and wide track for stability at high speeds. The long wheelbase leaves plenty of room for passengers, and for large doors to let them in and out.  cast in the style of a european sedan, the altima looks more like something from volkswagen or audi than honda or toyota. Yet the altima also has more exterior design detail than the camry or accord, with creased mirrors, integrated foglamps and other subtle cues. Altima's sloping roofline is reminiscent of a coupe. Its high trunk lid is set off by bold round taillights, turn signals and backup lights set in a triangular-shaped cover.  nissan subtly restyled the altima for 2005 for a more aggressive look. The new hood looks more athletic, with a muscular bulge suggesting a powerful engine. A smoother front fascia and smoked headlamps add to the bold impression, and tooth-like ridges molded into the horizontal grille bars tighten altima's kinship with the more exotic maxima. Altima's grille is large by contemporary standards, but not the least bit awkward.  altima is assembled with a one-piece bodyside structure for more consistent build quality. Altima has gained on camry and accord in exterior build quality and nissan claims panel-fit accuracy within 1. 0 mm. interiorthe nissan altima feels spacious inside and that's no illusion. It ranks at or near the top of the class in interior roominess. There's more front legroom here than in all but the largest vehicles on the road. The front seats are quite comfortable and large enough for larger bodies. Changes included a new instrument panel, a new center stack and a new center console. Seat materials, trim finishes and the headliner were upgraded and new chrome accents were added. Overall it's a vast improvement over earlier models and closer to toyota and honda levels, but still not quite there. The cloth upholstery is okay and the material used on the dash is nice, but the lids on the front of the center console are flimsy.  the altima is a comfortable car, however, and driver visibility is excellent. The dashboard is set relatively low, with a binnacle directly in front of the driver containing speedometer, tachometer, and water temperature and fuel gauges. The instruments glow orange in the dark, offering less interference to night vision. The three-spoke steering wheel tilts and telescopes to help optimize driving position. The shifter on models with manual transmissions is somewhat long, with long throws.  the available navigation display is located at the top of the center stack and it works well. Audio controls are mounted high on the center stack for easy access. At the top are two rows of buttons, used to control audio, trip computer, and navigation functions, with a small joy stick in the center. Heating/air conditioning control knobs lie directly below and are easy to locate with minimal distraction.  air conditioning vents are flush-mounted on the dash. Seams for the passenger-side airbag are invisible, cleverly hidden in a large expanse of unembellished dashboard surface. The center console has cupholders large enough for one-liter bottles. A power port inside the center console storage area is useful for cell phones. There's an adjustable elbow rest. The parking brake is a proper handbrake, located front and center. The windows can be opened with the remote key fob (by holding down the unlock button), a nice feature on hot summer days.  the rear seats are supportive and comfortable, with good legroom and sufficient headroom. A 6-foot, 4-inch passenger can sit comfortably behind a 6-foot, 4-inch drive.

New structure, new styling, new interior. introductionthe impala has been changing, morphing, and maturing with the vagaries of the market since 1958 when the first one showed up as a coupe and convertible.  now, the chevrolet impala has been substantially upgraded for 2006. The 2006 impala features new and very attractive exterior styling, a new interior, and a choice of three new engines.  the new impala is a comfortable and convenient car, roomy, easy to get in, with big grab-style door handles. It's a practical sedan with innovative flip-and-fold back seats and folding rear seatbacks. And it comes well-equipped with safety features, including side-curtain airbags. The impala lt best exemplifies the model line, especially when ordered with the larger, 3. 9-liter engine, which delivers responsive performance. The ltz upgrades with leather, a very nice xm satellite radio setup and other convenience features.  an inexpensive pricing structure with loads of rebates on it puts the new impala on the shopping list for family sedans. Impala competes with the ford five hundred, chrysler 300, dodge charger, honda accord, toyota camry, and nissan altima.  the ss stuffs a small-block v8 into this package. It comes with the bare essentials, such as air conditioning, power windows and locks, am/fm/cd, cruise control, cloth upholstery, a bench seat, and 16-inch steel wheels. Anti-lock brakes are optional 600).  the lt is available with the 3. 5-liter v6 21,860) or a new 3. 9-liter v6 24,760), which includes 17-inch alloy wheels. The ss comes with 18-inch wheels and tires and a performance suspension.  safety features that come standard include dual front smart air bags, and side-curtain roof-mounted air bags. Underneath, it gets a stiff new body and chassis structure, retuned suspensions with a 10-mm wider track, and new 16-, 17- and 18-inch wheels and tires.  the ls, lt and ltz share one front end design, while the ss has a completely different nose architecture. interiorthe new impala has a lot going for it inside as well, with a completely new, cleaned-up interior, reshaped and reupholstered seats, and flip/fold rear seats.  we felt pretty comfortable overall inside the impala. The seats have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support than previous models. We didn't find the ss seats particularly comfortable or supportive, with too much lumbar support and not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners. Optional leather-covered seating has a new style of seams around the perimeter and french seams on the center sections.  the impala also has a new twin-brow instrument panel design that wraps around into the door panels. Ls, lt and ltz models have a wood trim, with brushed silver trim optional. The impala ss comes standard with metallic trim panels, with wood trim as an option. We found the panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. We found the interior materials at least one grade better than the usual chevrolet stuff.  the optional dual-zone climate control system can have up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. It's a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The dashboard has an expanded driver information center, now with more than 50 different alerts, depending on the vehicle's equipment. The base audio system includes am/fm/cd and six speakers. An optional mp3/cd-radio is configured for xm satellite radio, with a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. The optional icdx radio adds an in-dash six-cd changer. All radios include a standard auxiliary input jack for external devices such as an ipod or remote cassette player.  the rear seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The rear seat cushions flip forward to create a covered storage area under the seat (with cushions down) and grocery bag hooks when the cushions are flipped. The seatback also folds down flat to create a large pass-through port to the trunk.  trunk space, at 18. 5 cubic feet, is more than competitive in the segment, and it has a huge opening for easy loading. driving impressionthe new chevrolet impala comes with a new generation of v6 engines. We found them to be smooth and quiet if not bristling with power. Variable valve timing is a first for the impala's cam-in-block v6 engines. The system changes the orientation of the camshaft, automatically adjusting the timing of the intake and exhaust valves for better performance, economy, and emissions. Thus, a system that started out on very expensive imported cars has now reached down to the lowly chevy v6 engines and made them better.  the 3. 5-liter v6 that comes on lt and ls models generates 211 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. The 3. 9-liter v6 that comes on ls and ltz models produces 242 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque. We're expecting both engines to earn fuel economy ratings of about 19/29 mpg city/highway.  with 303 horsepower, the impala ss has more power and torque than any other entry in the class, but the chassis that comes with the v8 needs taming. While we appreciated the extra power and torque available in a kickdown or passing situation, and we loved the brawny, muscular sound of this engine at full throttle, it's a challenge to launch cleanly and quickly at the same time. Besides wheelspin, there's a lot of torque steering. This system helps provide up to 8 percent better fuel economy in light-load driving conditions. However, there is a lot of pitch, dive, and body roll in this chassis, and a lot of uncertain driving moments with the added power of the ss. Steering is over-assisted, fairly numb and uncommunicative.  the impala's front suspension is a macpherson strut coil-over-spring independent design, with gas-charged struts and a stabilizer bar with new, taller jounce bumpers. The rear suspension uses a trailing arm, tri-link setup with gas-charged struts and coil springs. A rear stabilizer bar is standard on all models. The new abs includes electronic brake-force distribution. summarythe new chevrolet impala represents an improvement over previous models. The 3. 5 and 3. 9 v6 lt and ltz versions are pleasing to drive overall. While the ss cuts a conservative but dashing figure with its quiet badging and giant five-spoke, 18-inch wheels, it's got more power than it k.
