2008 lincoln mkz review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. In style and engineering, it's an upscale sibling to the ford fusion and mercury milan.    the mkz began a new direction for lincoln: luxury vehicles designed to engage the driver. The mkz succeeds, managing the difficult trick of delivering a ride that is generally comfortable with handling that makes it interesting and gratifying to drive quickly on a challenging country road.  the mkz is powered by a strong, 263-hp v6 driving the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available. And mkz's major standard equipment compares favorably with the best cars in this class.  for 2008, lincoln has made several popular options standard, including heated and cooled leather seats, and sirius satellite radio. New standard features include a reverse sensing system and a hands-free, voice-activated communications and entertainment system that ford calls sync.  overall, the mkz is well rounded. It's suitable for day-to-day commuting even on the midwest's broken streets, comfy for long-distance cruising on an interstate, and playful during a quick trip along a two-lane road through the mountains. It has plenty of power, but it uses regular fuel and delivers decent gas mileage. Surprisingly, however, the mkz does not offer electronic stability control.  the mkz has collected some impressive accolades. Among them: when it was introduced as a 2007 model, it ranked highest in the j. Power and associates initial quality study for premium cars. Its 3. 5-liter v6 has been named one of ward's 10 best engines. Its thx ii-certified stereo was voted best audio by pc magazine. And its navigation system was ranked no. 1 in j. A tire pressure monitor has also been added for 2008.  the mkz achieves acceptable ratings in heavy frontal and side-impact crash tests conducted by the insurance institute for highway safety, on a scale of good, acceptable, marginal, and poor. Some of the mkz's major competitors have good ratings in these tests. The mkz lacks electronic stability control. walkaroundthe lincoln mkz is styled in a conservative fashion, creating a prim, proper effect. The one exception is its wide chrome grille, which lincoln is using across its line to instill brand identity. Lincoln's wide, split-waterfall motif first appeared on the 1938 zephyr, so it's certainly appropriate for the mkz, originally launched as the lincoln zephyr, to wear it.  the lincoln is brightened by its jewelry: quad-beam halogen headlights (with hid units optional), bright-metal accents at the beltline and on the mirror caps, and chromed exhaust tips. Handsome 17-inch wheels contribute to mkz's purposeful stance. interiorthe lincoln mkz cabin is comfortable and luxurious. The interior is pleasant, convenient and reasonably quiet.  the cabin looks more upscale than that in the ford fusion and mercury milan, which share the mkz's underpinnings and some major mechanical components. The trim plastics look best in lighter colors. All in all, the mkz interior doesn't come across as shameless luxury as much as comfortably well-to-do, which is pretty much the standard for this class.  the controls for heating, cooling and the stereo are all easy to find and use. Storage is adequate.  the navigation system works well. The video screen is smaller than many, but it's easy to figure out without excessive reliance on the owner's manual. In short, it's comparable to other cars in its class.  trunk capacity is rated at 15. 8 cubic feet, which is more than many cars in this class. The trunk lid swings high for easy access, and the fold-down rear seat allows some flexibility for hauling more.  forward and over-the-shoulder visibility is acceptable. The high rear deck limits visibility immediately behind the mkz when backing up. The reverse-sensing system helps with this, providing an audible gauge of the distance between the mkz and whatever is behind it. driving impressionthe lincoln mkz comes from a 3. 5-liter v6, introduced for 2007, that delivers 263 horsepower, on par with the nissan maxima and infiniti g35. Moreover, the lincoln engine delivers full power on regular 87-octane gas, and was epa-rated at 18/28 mpg city/highway. This new engine benefits from the efficiency of a six-speed automatic transmission.  the lincoln's 3. 5-liter engine delivers great acceleration in the instances most drivers need it. It doesn't turn the mkz into a rocket, but acceleration is more than acceptable for any reasonable task, including a quick merge onto a busy interstate. And it's satisfying just to feel the rush of power. The duratec 3. 5-liter is smooth and fairly quiet.  the six-speed automatic cannot be shifted manually, feature some drivers like. Moreover, lincoln could improve the control program for a quicker response at low speeds. From a dead stop, or when traveling at 50 mph, the transmission works great. But at 10 mph, it's a different story. Creeping out of a parking lot, for example, the transmission will shift up a gear or two, apparently to save fuel. But when the driver approaches the street and hits the gas for a hole in traffic, the transmission doesn't want to kick back down to first gear. The mkz bogs a bit, and the anticipated acceleration isn't there.  we like the handling of this car. On a rough surface the mkz does a reasonably good job of shielding its occupants from broken pavement and poorly repaired potholes. But the engineers were clever enough to combine that ride with handling that is reassuring and satisfying. Despite having much of its weight up front, the all-wheel-drive model we tested was reasonably quick to change direction and head into a turn, lacking the stubborn, nose-heavy feeling of some all-wheel-drive cars.  the steering has a of weight to it for positive, satisfying response. Yet it doesn't feel heavy when pulling into a parking spot. And there's no loose, sloppy feeling when the mkz is pointed straight ahead. Turn the wheel just a little bit and the chassis begins to respond immediately, with no dead spot.  the brake pedal has a nice, progressive feel, and the brakes deliver more stopping power than the typical driver will ever use short of an emergency situation.  all-wheel drive is a great benefit when driving in snow or hard rain. We consider all-wheel drive a safety feature because it improves handling stability in foul weather. It can also be a huge help in getting up a slick hill. The system normally operates as front-wheel drive, but sends power to the rear wheels if the front tires begin to lose grip. The gap between the tires and flares looks tight, just as we like it.  the headlight and taillight clusters are elaborate, almost exotic. Nissan calls the headlamp arrangement a multi-parabola, which means its coverage is all over the place. As for the taillights, nissan says they cost nearly as much as the headlamps, so don't back into anything. They're covered with clear plastic like the headlamps, and contain a silver ray-gun looking cylinder with the red lamp, plus a round white beam for the backup light, and a big orange piece for the parking lamp and turn signal.  the altima coupe has the look of a pure sport two-door. There's good balance between the longish hood, greenhouse and short trunk lid, with just the right amount of sheet metal between the cleanly outlined wheel arches. This design probably increases stability at socially irresponsible speeds, but at rest it can look almost plump. Appointments range from fairly sparse to fully loaded, with no radio for the base car and bluetooth, navigation and backup camera at the top of the line.  the 2010 altima coupe and sedan feature new interior enhancements. There are new fabrics for both sedan and coupe, and a revised blonde interior color. In the coupe, the gauge appearance has been changed and incorporates white illumination. And other features.  the overall level of fit, finish and refinement inside the altima is very good and highly competitive in the class. The available leather upholstery feels rich, and soft materials are used for touches like padded.

Corolla is the longest continuous nameplate from a japanese manufacturer, and more than 30 million corollas have been sold to date in more than 140 countries. The corolla is inexpensive to buy and operate yet it doesn't feel like a cheap car. Completely redesigned for the 2009 model year, the corolla carries over with more safety equipment standard for 2010.  the corolla is easy to drive, with straightforward controls, minimal distractions, and a comprehensive list of standard safety equipment. It's a hop-in-and-go kind of car, easy to master. And it's comfortable. The base model has wind-up windows and manual door locks, and hardly anyone buys it. Upgrading to the corolla le adds power windows and locks, while the xle comes with wood-grain trim. The corolla xrs features a bigger engine, bigger brakes and performance tires for sportier driving dynamics. Leather trim is available on high-level models.  for 2010, corolla comes standard with vehicle stability control with traction control. Electronic stability control systems helps reduce spin-outs and accidents. lineupthe 2010 toyota corolla 15,350) comes standard with fabric upholstery, air conditioning, cd/wma/mp3/xm radio, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, six-way manual driver seat, 60/40 split folding rear seat, outside temperature gauge, power mirrors, and engine immobilizer. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard, as is toyota's vehicle stability control with traction control. walkaroundthe toyota corolla is an attractive car though not one that will attract a lot of attention. Overall, the styling is conservative. Fit and finish are at a high level for such an inexpensive car.  the current corolla is bigger than pre-2009 models. The light housings are similar, driven by styling heritage and modern safety standards. In any case, it's immediately recognizable as a toyota, and from behind as a corolla.  corolla s and xrs receive different lower nose and tail sections, the area around the fog lamps bearing a distant similarity to the lexus is, and trunk spoilers. It's a look that works better on the corolla xrs by virtue of its larger wheels. It also works best on darker colors because the added panels appear more integrated.  the corolla is slightly longer than the honda civic. The nissan sentra is noticeably taller and bigger. The nissan versa, honda fit, and toyota yaris are subcompacts, which are smaller than compact-class cars such as the corolla. interiorthe corolla has a comfortable, pleasant interior. Materials and patterns are understated. The standard cloth upholstery appears two-tone at first between bolsters and cushions, but it's just an illusion caused by the texturing. The wood-grain trim on the xle adds visual warmth not often seen in compacts and helps break up color monotony.  leather upholstery is available on the sport seats in the s and xrs models, though apparently leather is not offered on the xle. Wood grain trim is available on some models, but the faux wood reflects glare more than the standard trim does.  a dash is conventional, framing speedometer and tachometer with fuel and ancillary data. Corolla xle and xrs employ electroluminescent optitron gauges popularized by lexus for utmost clarity. Controls used often are on the tilt/telescoping steering column stalks, with others on dash and center stack. Second, it lacks voice recognition and bluetooth. Still, toyota's navigation system is easy to learn to use and it works very well.  the front seats are comfortable, and getting in and out of them is easy. The sport seats in the xrs use heavier bolsters for more support when cornering, though they are not well suited to people with large frames.  the rear seat is apropos for the class. The floor is flat except for a small incline to the back of the console. A sliding-top console comes on upper level models that's appreciated on long drives.  a remote release opens the trunk lid, which springs from the top of the bumper and bisects the taillights for a wide loading space. Cargo space of 12. 3 cubic feet is about average and isn't hindered by black boxes and big speakers hanging down under the back window. It's epa-rated at 26/35 mpg city/highway with the manual transmission and 26/34 mpg with the automatic. The 1. 8-liter engine uses dohc and dual variable valve timing with intelligence (vvt-i) to optimize valve timing for the best blend of power, economy and emissions. It uses a timing chain rather than a belt, which usually saves on service costs.  the 2. 4-liter engine that comes on the xrs makes 158 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. It has epa-rated fuel economy figures of 22/30 mpg city/highway with either transmission. It also benefits from dual vvt-i technology. There's no point in pushing the 2. 4 to its redline as it won't go any faster and never gets a whole lot of sparkle to it; it just goes. All models run fine on regular unleaded gasoline.  contributing to the acceleration performance of the xrs is shorter gearing in both transmissions. Regardless of the transmission, the xrs does not like to take off quickly on a rippled surface, and the manual doesn't like being rushed into first gear. The manual shifter is good, not as slick and precise as the honda civic but far ahead of the chevrolet aveo's rubbery arrangement. Although the corolla xrs five-speed automatic has sequential shifting on the console lever, it would benefit from wheel-mounted paddles like those on the honda fit sport.  the standard corolla rides more smoothly than the corolla xrs does. As wheel diameter increases and tire aspect ratio decreases (causing the tire sidewalls to become shorter) so does handling crispness improve and the potential for ride comfort degrade. The 2010 ford fusion, and in particular, the 2010 ford fusion hybrid, delivers contemporary styling, a first-class driving experience, and world-class fuel mileage.  epa ratings for the ford fusion hybrid are a stupendous 41/36 mpg city/highway. The fusion gets eight more miles per gallon in city driving and two more on the highway than does the toyota camry hybrid. During los angeles morning rush, we drove the fusion hybrid in heavy traffic from the sunset strip 10 miles west along hilly, snaking sunset boulevard to the beach, then south to santa monica pier, all the while proceeding at a distinctly non-funereal pace. The combined horsepower of the hybrid's gas engine and electric motor is 191 hp, but the literally instantaneous torque of its forceful electric motor makes it feel like more.  most of the new fusion's dimensions are unchanged from the previous model, but mechanically and in styling, the 2010 model exhibits vastly more than a mere freshening of last year's model. The new exterior, nicely enhanced with chrome, has a muscular, crisp euro panache that is, if anything, pleasingly saab-like.  the various gas-engine 2010 fusion models we drove are similarly comfortable, commodious, and in the case of the sport model, excitingly agile. A six-speed automatic is optional.  fusion se 20,545) adds six-speaker audio, fog lamps, fold-flat passenger seat, body-color mirrors, six-way power driver seat, sirius satellite radio, steering wheel audio and cruise controls, illuminated visor mirrors, and 17-inch wheels. A six-speed select-shift automatic is optional. How long has it been since the mainstream american mid-size elicited that?  the fusion's sinuousness is continued in the carefully raised modeling of the hood, implying that what lies beneath is something genuinely worthy. The fusion is no dragster, but its performance is spirited, and its 7. 0-second 0-to-60 time in the sport model gives it the edge over the honda accord (7. 4 seconds) and toyota camry (7. 1 seconds).  given the conservative looks of the honda and toyota, the fusion's styling makes a statement all its own. Its well-formed flanks, accented by gleaming streaks of chrome, give the fusion both a dynamically fresh appearance and excellent aerodynamic efficiency. Its coefficient of drag, aided by underbody airflow tuning, is an extremely low 0. 32, helping achieve high fuel mileage.  ford stylists were able to combine graceful styling with practicality in another way. The fusion's high-bustled three-box design delivers a tall, capacious trunk volume of 11. 8 cubic feet. It also delivers an easy lift-over height.  in style and stance, the new ford has a sporting, fun-to-drive spirit not normally associated with either japanese or american workaday mid-sizers. Think of ecoguide as an automotive video game. Black pebble-grain texture on the dash gave things a well-furnished glow. The seat cushions were flat and minimally cushioned. The two outside seats had a hint of lateral support, while the passenger in the center rear would be well advised to negotiate an upgrade. The ford mustang defined the pony-car segment in 1964; plymouth's barracuda may have beaten ford to the showroom by 16 days, but it was the mustang that set the sales records. The 'cuda is gone now, and so are the camaro, firebird, cougar, javelin, challenger, and every other would-be rival, leaving ford's pony to prance alone. At least for now.  for 2007, the 210-hp mustang v6 and 300-hp mustang gt are joined by the new 500-hp supercharged shelby gt500, offering its own look, tuning, and equipment.  available in fastback coupe or convertible body styles, the mustang v6 models make nice, stylish cruisers. The gt is an absolute hoot to drive, making all the right sounds, hanging onto corners tenaciously, and delivering thrilling acceleration performance. The shelby gt500 adds to the fun with its near-corvette performance. It's quite tossable, making for good sport on gymkhanas, race tracks or back roads. It delivers the bold styling, rear-drive performance and affordability that have been mustang hallmarks for decades, but it's smoother and quieter and better built than older models.  its interior looks like a throwback from the '60s, but it's functional and well finished. Granted, interior space is limited, especially given its exterior dimensions; and the back seat might better be described as a package shelf.  the ford mustang is an american success story. It holds true to an idea that still appeals to people of all ages, decades after the original was launched. Sirius satellite radio 195) joins the option list for '07, and dvd-based navigation will be available on later 2007 models.  safety features on all mustangs include dual-stage front-impact airbags and three-point belts for all seats. Antilock brakes and traction control are standard on gts and optional on v6 models. Front passenger side-impact airbags 380) are optional on all models, so be sure to order them as they are designed to offer torso protection in a side impact. walkaroundnothing says modern american sporty car better than this latest mustang. Its long hood and short rear deck capitalize on 40 years of pony-car heritage. The current mustang features classic design cues that have defined mustangs since the 1960s: c-scoops in the sides, three-element tail lamps and a galloping horse badge in the center of the grille. Its menacing shark-like nose is reminiscent of the 1967-70 models.  yet the mustang follows modern trends by offering ever-larger wheels, including two distinct 18-inch wheel designs for the gt. The modern mustang is based on the same mechanical platform as the jaguar s-type, albeit with some cost-trimming measures such as its live-axle rear suspension.  relative to previous mustangs, everything under the car has been substantially upgraded. The brakes are bigger by nearly 20 percent. A completely new front and rear suspension yields a much quieter, smoother ride as well as much more precise steering during hard cornering. New engines deliver performance with efficiency. Optional antilock brakes bundled with traction control give any a fighting chance in bad situations.  all mustang engines are secured to the body with hydraulic mounts, which absorb and counteract vibration and pulsing. By adapting ideas and components from luxury cars, ford has given the current mustang a level of sophistication its predecessors never had. Yet the mustang heritage of low-cost performance and flashy styling has not been compromised one iota.  like its muscle-era namesake, the shelby gt500 stands out with a unique front grille and bumper fascia, providing both a functionally larger and unimpeded air intake, while reducing air flow under the body. A unique engine hood with dual air-extraction slits is domed to clear the larger, 5. 4-liter engine. Carroll shelby's signature striking-cobra emblem glowers from the gas cap and from a characteristically off-center position in the grille. The whole package rides on unique 18-inch rims sporting ford's svt (special vehicle team) logo. Just as in 1968, coupes are topped by le mans-style racing stripes. They look terrific, though we're not sure they should carry down onto the rear bumper where they compete with the rear license plate.  shelby convertibles feature a premium fabric for the top. interiorthe mustang interior is as blatantly throwback as the exterior, and nearly as well done. It's sporty and crisp in appearance and straightforward in function.  there's a heavy dose of 1967 mustang inside, with the dash divided into distinct right and left pods, blended with modern touches. Chrome-ringed air vents align across the dash, precisely in line with the gauges, and the steering wheel has three spokes with a center hub marked by the horse-and-tricolor-bars logo. While some of the materials have a cost-saving look and feel, the package is not bad given the high style and price of entry. Speaking of brightening, however, there's enough shiny metal on this car's dash and steering wheel to create some glare problems for drivers on sunny days (just like the old days). Another interior upgrade package, with satin or dark-finish aluminum inserts instead of chrome, goes a long way toward eliminating traces of cheapness.  these are the good old days in terms of roominess in the mustang.
